On arrival visas free of charge for tourists from 36 countries
Tourism Development Minister John Amaratunga said yesterday the government would grant on arrival visas for tourists from 36 countries free of charge from May 1 onwards for a trial period of six months.
Minister Amaratunga told Daily Mirror that tourists from the countries such as those in European Union, New Zealand, Australia, Thailand, Cambodia and Japan would be given this facility.
Afterwards, the Minister said it would be implemented for six months initially.
"Depending on its success, we will decide whether to proceed with it further or not. They will be allowed into the country without a fee.
Every year, there is a drop in tourist arrivals during the six months period starting from May. We will implement this programme during this period in a move to boost tourist arrivals,” he said.
The Minister said his target was to attract three million tourists to the country by the year’s end.(Kelum Bandara)

Colombo Commercial City Development Plan and Capital City Development Plan - (2019-2030)
Drafts of Colombo Commercial City Development Plan and Capital City Development Plan which will be in effect for the period of 2019 to 2030 are open for public review from 11th of March 2019.
The draft plans which have been prepared by the Urban Development Authority in consultation with relevant stakeholder agencies were officially handed over to the Minister of Megapolis & Western Development, Honorable Patali Champika Ranawaka, on 11th of March 2019 at a formal presentation event organized by the UDA with the presence of relevant stakeholders.
The Draft Plans are available for public review in the website, www.uda.gov.lk for 60 days from 11th of March 2019. UDA invites all stakeholders and general public to review the draft plans and forward the reviews and comments directly through the link given in above website or to the email addresses - [email protected]/ [email protected]. Rolls-Royce to supply MTU rail engines for CRRC trains in Sri Lanka
Rolls-Royce Power Systems and Chinese company Dongfang Electric International Corporation have reached agreement on the supply of four MTU 12V 4000 R41 rail engines to be installed in railcars made by CRRC, the world’s largest train manufacturer, and operated by Sri Lanka Railways. This is the fourth time since the year 2007 that Sri Lanka Railways has chosen MTU drive systems.
Daniel Moosherr, Head of Rail Sales at MTU, said: “We are delighted to be continuing our successful partnership with CRRC and Sri Lanka Railways. This demonstrates that our engines are proving their worth in the tough conditions of Sri Lanka, and that they meet our customers’ expectations over the long term.” The four additional engines will bring the total number of Sri Lanka Railways CRRC railcars with MTU engines to 60. The vehicles ordered in 2007, 2010 and 2018 to date are S10, S12 and S14 railcars that are in service throughout the country.
CRRC and Rolls-Royce Power Systems already agreed a strategic partnership in November 2017. It sets out, among other things, that CRRC will continue to consider MTU engines as a drive solution for diesel railcars and locomotives in the future. The agreement references, in particular, the Belt & Road Initiative, the infrastructure plan of the People’s Republic of China to expand and enhance the connections between Asia, Europe and Africa. The aim is to improve the movement of goods. To this end, China plans to invest the equivalent of hundreds of billions of euros in the infrastructure of many countries in these regions. CRRC plays a central role in this.

Chengdu keen to set up steel plant in Hambantota
A delegation from Chengdu Association for Foreign Trade and Cooperation (CAFTEC) Chengdu, China was keen on setting up a steel project in Hambantota, when they met the Chairman, BOI Hemasiri Fernando in Colombo this week.
The Chengdu Business Council was the first Chinese Chamber to open an office in Colombo and plans to set up seven more regional offices in other South Asian countries. The delegation consisted of Chen Xia, Secretary General (CAFTEC) who was accompanied by two members and by Kosala Wickramanayake, President – International Business Council. The purpose of the delegation was to promote Sri Lanka and particularly projects in Hambantota. In addition, Chen briefed the BOI Chairman on the potential of the city of Chengdu.
“Chengdu is in the south-western part of China and has a rich history. The city has emerged as a center for Chinese advanced manufacturing industry, clean energy and modern service industry including AI, big data, 5G technology. Of the cities in Western China, Chengdu has the highest economic volume. Our organization has had a close connection with Sri Lanka for about 11 years,” Chen said. Further, Colombo and Chengdu are benefiting for direct air connection for many years. Chengdu is also world renowned for the Giant Panda Research Center and the city was named the top ‘must-visit’ city in Mainland China in 2017.
“One project that is to be built in Chengdu is the South Asian pavilion, that will showcase South Asian specialty products,” he added. Chairman of the BOI Fernando welcomed this first move by the Chengdu Business Council starting, “This will mutually, benefit both the BOI and the Council.” He informed Chen that he would ensure Chengdu authorities of the fullest co-operation in all their activities in Sri Lanka. He also invited them to extend their study to other BOI Zones, not just to Hambantota. “Historically there have always been excellent relations between Sri Lanka and China,” he concluded.

SLT-Huawei to partner for Colombo Port City’s Smart City project
Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) to partner with Huawei to take up on the Smart City project at Colombo Port City with an aim to position Colombo Port City as Southeast Asia’s premier smart city.
“We are collaborating with Huawei to work on the Smart City project at Colombo Port City and we believe that there’s lot of value that Huawei can bring us,” SLT CEO Kiththi Perera announced.
He made this announcement yesterday addressing Huawei Lanka ICT Congress 2019, in Colombo. SLT plans to develop and implement the digital backbone and smart solutions for Colombo Port City, with an ambition to elevate it to be Southeast Asia’s premier smart city.
Huawei Sri Lanka CEO Shunli Wang speaking at the event said Huawei is looking forward to partnering with the government and telecom operators of the local market to make the digital transformation happen.
“As a strategic partner to SLT, we are awaiting to provide the best solutions and ideas to help SLT in its business development.
Colombo Port City is one part of our discussion,” he said.
Wang noted that as smart cities require a lot of talent from various industries, the smart cities will create attractive job opportunities for high-skilled Sri Lankans to retain in the country.
Huawei has already assisted over 120 cities in over 40 countries and regions to implement various smart city projects.
In providing a glimpse into Huawei’s smart city solution, Huawei Marketing Operation Director Network Energy Xiaoxin Song said that Huawei’s smart city solutions are mainly built around Internet of things and artificial intelligence (AI), while emerging technologies are also utilised as per the requirement of the city.
“AI is the next core technology that will be used on large scale on the digital platform. AI drives smart city development with data, algorithms and processes,” he said.
He identified that the top leadership, strong execution teams, industry leading digital partners and solid investments as crucial factors for the success of smart city projects.
Perera stressed that in order to facilitate the digital transformation of the country, an effective programme to change the culture or mindset of the citizen of the country is also essential.
He pointed out that over 70 percent of projects related to digital transformation fail due to lack of emphasis on cultural aspect in digital transformation.
SLT also plans to develop smart solutions to several segments in the government, including health, education and utilities.
“We are expanding and we are bringing critical platforms: smart education through school network and smart health by connecting all government hospitals. We are also talking to the Power and Energy Ministry to establish a smart grid and smart metering project,” he elaborated.
Huawei officials have already expressed interest in partnering with SLT in these projects to support digital transformation in Sri Lanka.
While affirming the government’s confidence on Huawei as a trusted and guided partner, Telecommunications, Sports and Foreign Employment Minister Harin Fernando said that Huawei is equipped with cutting-edge latest technology to assist economies such as Sri Lanka through its digitalisation journey. He expects that digitalisation will transform the manufacturing, tourism and agriculture sectors in the country. Huawei CTO SEA Region Michael Macdonald expects that the global digital economy, which was valued at US $ 12.9 trillion, will nearly double to US $ 23 trillion by next year.
Huawei has been playing an active role in assisting local telco operators to deploy the Massive MIMO technology that plays a pivotal role allowing achieving greater spectrum efficiency, tripling the base station capacity and to provide a fibre-like experience for users.
The company is currently listed as number 72 in Fortune Global 500, with over US $ 108 billion in revenue in 2018.

He made this announcement yesterday addressing Huawei Lanka ICT Congress 2019, in Colombo. SLT plans to develop and implement the digital backbone and smart solutions for Colombo Port City, with an ambition to elevate it to be Southeast Asia’s premier smart city.
Huawei Sri Lanka CEO Shunli Wang speaking at the event said Huawei is looking forward to partnering with the government and telecom operators of the local market to make the digital transformation happen.
“As a strategic partner to SLT, we are awaiting to provide the best solutions and ideas to help SLT in its business development.
Colombo Port City is one part of our discussion,” he said.
Wang noted that as smart cities require a lot of talent from various industries, the smart cities will create attractive job opportunities for high-skilled Sri Lankans to retain in the country.
Huawei has already assisted over 120 cities in over 40 countries and regions to implement various smart city projects.
In providing a glimpse into Huawei’s smart city solution, Huawei Marketing Operation Director Network Energy Xiaoxin Song said that Huawei’s smart city solutions are mainly built around Internet of things and artificial intelligence (AI), while emerging technologies are also utilised as per the requirement of the city.
“AI is the next core technology that will be used on large scale on the digital platform. AI drives smart city development with data, algorithms and processes,” he said.
He identified that the top leadership, strong execution teams, industry leading digital partners and solid investments as crucial factors for the success of smart city projects.
Perera stressed that in order to facilitate the digital transformation of the country, an effective programme to change the culture or mindset of the citizen of the country is also essential.
He pointed out that over 70 percent of projects related to digital transformation fail due to lack of emphasis on cultural aspect in digital transformation.
SLT also plans to develop smart solutions to several segments in the government, including health, education and utilities.
“We are expanding and we are bringing critical platforms: smart education through school network and smart health by connecting all government hospitals. We are also talking to the Power and Energy Ministry to establish a smart grid and smart metering project,” he elaborated.
Huawei officials have already expressed interest in partnering with SLT in these projects to support digital transformation in Sri Lanka.
While affirming the government’s confidence on Huawei as a trusted and guided partner, Telecommunications, Sports and Foreign Employment Minister Harin Fernando said that Huawei is equipped with cutting-edge latest technology to assist economies such as Sri Lanka through its digitalisation journey. He expects that digitalisation will transform the manufacturing, tourism and agriculture sectors in the country. Huawei CTO SEA Region Michael Macdonald expects that the global digital economy, which was valued at US $ 12.9 trillion, will nearly double to US $ 23 trillion by next year.
Huawei has been playing an active role in assisting local telco operators to deploy the Massive MIMO technology that plays a pivotal role allowing achieving greater spectrum efficiency, tripling the base station capacity and to provide a fibre-like experience for users.
The company is currently listed as number 72 in Fortune Global 500, with over US $ 108 billion in revenue in 2018.

SAGT strengthens operating infrastructure capabilities with Rs. 1.6 b investment
South Asia Gateway Terminals Ltd., the first public private partnership stevedoring container terminal in Sri Lanka, strengthened its operating infrastructure capabilities with the addition of six state-of-the-art Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) Cranes recently with an investment of Rs. 1.6 billion.
The addition of the new yard handling equipment will boost the terminal’s RTG fleet from 31 to 37. This latest operational enhancement follows the introduction of ten intra-terminal trailers in June 2018.
The six ZPMC built RTGsare state of the art, providing operator ergonomic comfort, optimum safety and a host of features designed for high-efficiency.
SAGT was recently awarded the “Best Terminal in the Indian Sub-Continent Region” for third consecutive year and was also awarded the coveted “Best Transshipment Hub Port Terminal of the year” by Singapore-based Global Ports Forum.
