PRINCESS is a book based on a true story of a rebellious Saudi princess. The author of the book Jean Sasson has worked in a Saudi hospital and while working in the hospital she met a Saudi royal princess and became a friend of her. This Saudi princess is introduced as “Princess Sultana” a pseudonym to protect her identity. Sultana reveals her life story to author Jean Sasson.
The book is in first person point of view. The story starts by the events of her childhood. There sultana describes her early experience in the male dominant Saudi society. The way her mother and sisters were treated and the way her brother was treated differently are highlighted in the early chapters. Showing Sultana’s rebellious nature in early childhood she keeps challenging her brother Ali.
Growing up she discovers more gruesome traditions of Saudi society such as pedophile nature of Saudi men including her father and how Saudi girls were traded under the name of marriage. For example Sultana’s sister Sara was proposed to an old man who was over sixty years old. In the wedding day she was sedated using powerful medication by a doctor under the orders of her father fearing that she would oppose openly in the wedding day.
Ordinary Saudi girls were not allowed to receive any kind of education except the Qur’an. Because of Sultana’s family belongs to the extended family of the Saudi royals Sultana and her sisters were allowed to study things outside of Qur’an by a private tutor. But the male children were even sent to western countries to study. The book reveals the conflict between western educated young Saudi royals and the religious institution “Ulema” for reform.
