Rogers rules himself out of D/N Tests
Colour blind opener can't play against pink ball
If Australia’s first Test against Pakistan in the UAE was a day/night match using a pink ball, opening batsman Chris Rogers would be forced to rule himself out.
Rogers says “there’s no future for it” as a colour blind batsman.
“I cannot play with it (the pink ball). It is pointless,” the 37-year-old told cricket.com.au.
Day/night Test cricket is a top priority for Cricket Australia, with next year’s November Test series against New Zealand pencilled in for the inaugural twilight event.
The appeal of day/night Test cricket being broadcast during prime time television, as seen in the eastern states when matches are played at Perth’s WACA ground, and the prospect of attracting new fans after school and work is too good to ignore.
And though Rogers would be unable to play, the left-hander can understand the strong push for it.
“Night Test cricket would be amazing in many respects,” Rogers said.
“We still have to look at ways to make sure the popularity of the sport stays the way it is or improves.
“That’s one way definitely it can happen but from a personal point of view it’s not viable because I can’t see the ball.
“I think there’s a round of Shield cricket early this year and if I was available I’d have to rule myself out.
“That’s disappointing and I’ve spoken to other colour blind cricketers and they feel the same way.
“Is that just bad luck? I don’t know.”
