A senior scientist attached to thr National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) predicted yesterday that Colombo could become colder than Kandy in the future.
He also predicted that Sri Lanka also could face a flood disaster as in the Uttar Pradesh in India where thousands were rendered homeless when dams broke
The Scientist, H.G.S. Ariyaratne yesterday attributed changes in the weather pattern and the global warming.
He explained the increased temperature sends up an increased amount of steam to the clouds. This increased amount of steam could in turn bring in heavy rains and floods, landslides and a reduction in temperature.
This in turn could plunge the country into a food crisis.
“In these circumstances it is possible that Colombo could become colder than usually cold areas such as Kandy.
However, the areas which have become dry as a result of gravitational change would become warmer. Australia is a good example according to him.
He explained the global warming therefore has turned around global changes caused by the tsunami once again. The massive earth tremor that created the tsunami in 2004 had released a massive upsurge of energy to the earth in the form of waves.
This energy had brought about a gravitational change reducing the density in the soil in some areas and increasing it in certain other areas. In Sri Lanka according to him, the soil density had reduced resulting in landslides in areas such as Bahirawakanda and Walapane areas. “However this situation had eased off during the past few months but had been brought back by the global warming that had affected Sri Lanka,” he said.
Mr. Ariyaratne stressed the need for a joint effort by all sectors such as geologists, biologists and agricultural experts to save Sri Lanka He also stressed the need to use modern technology such as Remote Sensiry and GIS software which could be helpful.
He was also pointed out that a simple study on the movements of small animals
such as snails which has a sense of impending natural disasters would also help.
