Yersinia Pestis still exists... Only last July (2021) it was reported from Antananarivo (Madagascar) that there was one death and 15 suspected cases. The next day six deaths were reported. In September another 22 confirmed cases were found. The outbreak was contained by treating all the contacts with cotrimoxazole or doxycycline.
Also this bacteria was detected in a colony of Prairie Dogs in Colorado. The fleas carry it along to the rodent populations. It's quite common.

Y. Pestis causes disease in three forms- bubonic, pneumonic and septicemic. Pneumonic is very serios and if untreated near 100% fatality. So an initial misdiagnosis (similar to Flu) could result in death.
We now know that Y. Pestis evolved from a relatively mild gut pathogen Yersinia pseudotuberculosis., somewhere between 5000 -10000 years ago. So instead of causing a mild stomach upset, the bacterium evolved to a virulent killer causing a wide scale Black-Death somewhere in the 1350's.
The Y. Pestis which carried the gene for a single protein called Pla made the difference. The pre-Pla strains did NOT cause the plague. So just with one small amino-acid change a killer bacteria surfaced. Pretty scary, isn''t it?

This is an interesting documentary on how the village of Eyam, in Derbyshire survived the Black Death. How the CCR5-Delta32 mutation is linked to HIV immunity.

Also those with the Delta mutation aren't get seriously affected by Covid-19 or simply they are not infected. This is not mentioned in the video but scientists are aware and trying to ascertain whether a CCR 5 (Chemokine Receptor-5) blocking antibody could be developed or on how the CCR5 can be targeted to develop a Covid-19 drug.

In the mid-1990s, it was discovered that possession of the CCR5-Δ32 allele leads ‘to nearly complete resistance to HIV-1 infection’ and AIDS. This genetic mutation shows strong geographical traits: while supposedly absent among Africans, Amerindians and East Asians, it is found in up to 14%, in certain northern populations of Eurasia, and more recently this figure has been estimated to be as high as 18%. Moreover, within Eurasia the frequency of this gene shows a north-to-south cline, with its highest rates in north-eastern Europe. Subsequent research has largely sustained these geographical patterns, although geneticists now find that the allele was not wholly absent from non-Eurasian populations, but is also detected in people of African descent.
In a survey of CCR5-Δ32 allele frequencies in 38 ethnic populations with 4166 subjects, the absence of the allele outside Eurasia, and a north-south gradient within Europe, were affirmed. Frequencies for Asia were very low (0% for Chinese descendents, 0% for Georgians and 3.4% for Uzbeks—the highest for any area of Asia, unless Russia is assumed to be Asian; no distinction was made between Asiatic and European, or north and south Russia.

The "The Quarantine 32 and Prevention of Diseases Ordinance, 1897" was placed in effect and everyone was held for 10 days or more in quarantine and was not released unless sure that they didn't carry the disease. Even then they had to report to the GMO everyday for quite some time. The then British Governor and the Plague Committee did a splendid job.

PS: The word Quarantine is derived from “quaranta giorni,” meaning 40 days, and traces back to the 14th century when the city of Dubrovnik, now in Croatia, was under Venetian rule. The Great Pestilence, or the Great Plague, as it was known at the time, was devastating Europe. As a form of protection, Dubrovnik declared that all ships and people had to be isolated for 40 days before entering the city. Later, the disease would be referred to as the Black Death.
