10th anniversary of Maligawa bomb attack

A commemoration event will be conducted at the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy today to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the LTTE bomb attack on the sacred Temple.

The event has been organized by the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) to invoke blessings on peoples killed in the LTTE bomb attack on January 25, 1998.

A bomb laden lorry which came along Raja Veediya was exploded by a suicide bomber at the entrance to Maligawa.

JHU parliamentarians, advisers and several government and opposition politicians are slated to attend the event.

Members of the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) including Maha Sangha and laymen, in large numbers, attended an determination, at the Sri Dalada Maligawa on Friday (25) late afternoon, to mark the 10th Anniversary of the LTTE Tamil Tterrorists bomb attack on the world`s most venerated shrine, the Sri Dalada Maligawa. The event was organized by the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) Kandy Disa Sabawa.

A Peaceful protest march from Kandy Clock Tower to Sri Dalada Maligawa to protest against the ‘Bomb attack by the LTTE Tamil terrorists ’, also held yesterday evening.

The hundreds of Buddhist monks take part in the march. Hundreds of people gathered at the Sri Dalada Maligawa.

After the Protest walk Special religious ceremony held at Shrine Room, at Sri Dhalada Maligawa. After the religious event a meeting was also held at Sri Dhalada Maligawa premises.

Ven.Omalpe Sobitha Thero, the General Secretary of the JHU, Ven.Ellawala Medhanandha Thero, the Leader of the JHU, Ven.Athuraliye Rathana Thero, the Policy Maker of the JHU, Environment Minister Pathali Champika Ranawaka , were also addressed the gathering. H.M.G.B Kotakedeniya, the defence adviser to the President and the Central Committee member of the JHU, Ven.Missaka Kamalasiri Thero, Ven.Dutuwewa Lankananda thero, JHU Media spokesmen Nishantha Sri Warnasinghe, Thurasha Saranatilake, Kandy district JHU organizer were present at the meeting.

The 10th Anniversary of the LTTE terrorist attack on the Sri Dalada Maligawa, Kandy was commemorated in the United Kingdom on Sunday, January 20.

The event was organized by a Sri Lankan-born UK resident,Basnayake who also arranged an alms giving for the Maha Sangha in memory of those were killed by the terrorists.

The gathering was addressed by Professor Jayasinghe, Medical Faculty of the John Beth University, the Venerable Gunnepana Sumanararama and Dr. M.B. Ranathunga.
