July 9 BOI: Silvermere Hospitals signed an agreement with the BOI to establish a state of the art medical centre. Mr. Tariq Rauf, Chairman of Silvermere Hospitals Limited signed the agreement on behalf of the Hospital. Mr Dhammika Perera, Chairman / Director General signed the Agreement for the BOI. Dr Sarath Amunugama, Minister of Enterprise Development and Investment Promotion formally handed over the BOI Certificate of Registrations to the investor.

The Embassy Medical Centre (EMC), a flagship project of the BOI is an investment of US $ 124 million. The proposed Embassy Medical Centre (EMC) will be the pioneer of Sri Lanka’s next generation of healthcare. The hospital will provide customized, professional and state of the art healthcare services of the highest quality within the shores of Sri Lanka.

Silvermere International, a US based company held in high respect for its ability to introduce cutting edge materials and technologies to South Asian markets, having identified the demand to provide safe and high quality healthcare has embarked on an effort to pioneer the introduction of a unique hospital development project in Sri Lanka “Embassy Medical Centre”.

Charles Knight, from Perkins +Will, is a leading architect who has designed the hospital project. Perkins + Will which is internationally known for its innovative approach, has undertaken work on many hospital projects in the USA, the UAE and other countries worldwide.

The establishment will be located in the northern suburbs of Colombo and is expected to be launched as a 128 bed hospital in 2010. Embassy Medical Centre (EMC) will later be expanded into a comprehensive 180 room facility. All rooms will be designed to include modern medical, computer and administrative systems to support the best physicians. The EMC will offer children and families the very best in diagnostic and medical-surgical care. The services the hospital offers include Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, NICU, Critical Care for adults, a Cardiac Monitored Unit and Adult in patient.

The EMC will take a proactive approach to support the medical needs of its patients, each person and family served will be invited to enrol in the ‘Embassy Health Services Plan’, one which offers benefits on par with those of a membership health club. Embassy Health Services Plan in turn will facilitate the provision of discounted health related products and service experiences.

‘Membership Service Model’ is a system that will enhance the performance of physicians helping them with the registering of patients, reducing the risk of medical errors, promoting healthy lifestyles, proactive health protection and disease prevention initiatives. People affiliated with the new care system will benefit by the ease and efficiency in arranging appointments in the hospital’s service centres and channelling medical suites on the hospital campus, but also the free standing ‘Embassy Family Medical Clinics’ strategically located in Havelock City, Battaramulla, Mount Lavinia, Negombo and Male in the Maldives.

In addition to being unique the EMC once operational, will be the only hospital in Sri Lanka that has formal strategic alliances with respected physicians and medical institutions in the UK and the US. Physicians from London and the US would be scheduled into Colombo and linked via teleconference.

With these alliances the EMC will be in a position to exploit a wide spectrum of support services including Medical education for the nurses and physicians of EMC, Opportunities to host physician and nursing staff from the EMC for educational experiences in hospitals based overseas, Installation of modern medical care protocols for the treatment of diseases of children and adults, and Special Bio Medical engineering support services from UK and US hospitals.

The Embassy Medical Centre will have a competitive advantage in design principles to rationalise consumption and reduce waste. It will have the distinction of being the first establishment in the world to house a medical Bio- Anaerobic incinerator as a means of generating energy for the hospital and the community around.

The EMC expects a status of self-sufficiency whereby it will not only produce its own resources from water to own energy, but it will also take care of its own waste thereby taking the weight off the Peliyagoda Municipality.

Mr. Christy Mancelline, Director of Silvermere Hospitals stated “The EMC will create history by introducing the first medical Bio-Anaerobic incinerator, community energy resource, modern use of open air terraces of patient rooms, eight storey’s open air cooling water fall, on site housing for staff and visitors and mass transit connectors”.

Silvermere Hospitals Limited and its first medical system based in Colombo, has been formed to provide world class hospital and healthcare services to the people of South Asia, and for cost effective medical tourism into our region from Europe and the US.

EMC is committed to the care and improvement of human life. In recognition EMC will deliver high quality, cost-effective healthcare in the communities they serve.

The Embassy Medical Centre will be located on a 13 acre site near the New Kelani Bridge in the suburbs of Colombo. The Medical Centre will provide convenient parking for patients and visitors, with a parking ramp for 300 cars adjacent to staff and family dormitories and apartments. Unique plantings and water fountains are used to create a quiet and comfortable environment for the medical services.

The Operating Structure is primarily categorized in to two parts consisting of Regional Family Care and International Patient Care. Regional Family Care, concept focuses on a particular market segment that caters to families in Sri Lanka and the South Asian region. The facility would focus on certain areas such as children’s paediatrics, and housing available for the families of patients. International Patient Care will attract patients from around the world including Europe and North America. The concept “Medical Tourism” is where consumers travel long distances for medical treatment, where the market is expected to grow rapidly for the next 30 years.

The proposed medical centre will provide healthcare services that was once a commodity available only to those Sri Lankans who had the opportunity to travel overseas for treatment.
