The Campaign for Free and Fair Elections has described today's (May 10th) polls for the Eastern Provincial Council as one in which the supremacy of violence prevailed over the supremacy of the law.
At a media briefing in Colombo, CAFFE spokesman Rajitha Keerthi Tennakoon said they had received 175 complaints by 3.30 pm.
Twenty-six of them were assaults, followed by 35 threats, 61 ejections of voters, 16 impersonations and 36 other incidents.
Batticaloa has reported 63 of them, while Trincomalee and Digamadulla had 58 and 34 incidents respectively, Mr. Tennakoon said.
Instead of a free and fair election, young boys and girls aged between 13 and 15 years had stuffed ballot boxes, CAFFE monitors had observed in Batticaloa.
In Digamadulla, outsiders had unleashed terror against targeted persons, the spokesman said.
Meanwhile, in Trincomalee, impersonations using people from Puttalam had taken place at certain polling centres, he added.
