87 was an eventful year for Sri Lanka. Both Jothipala and Ramani (actress -stage and tele) died around June. Before that Pettah Bus stand Bomb killed undisclosed number of innocent people by LTTE. In July Indo Lanka peace accord was signed and this led to massive protests against regime . Rajiv Ghandi was assaulted by Navy Guard of Honour . IPKF landed a day after JR-Rajiv Peace Accord .Some top brass 13 or 14 LTTE were captured by Navy and were brought to Colombo on the orders of JR as our forces were confined to barracks. All thirteen of them committed suicide in Colombo and this led to IPKF and LTTE declare war.
This is also the year JVP regained their popularity through Anti-Indian slogans and protests that resulted second insurrection in 89-90.
Gam Udawa was banned by JVP and its announcer Premakirthi de Alwis was assassinated on 1st august 89. Kalum Wijesuriya who was also an announcer at Gam Udawa went hiding (he was a law student of UOC at that time). Many talelnted people were killed and all started in 87. Unis were closed permanently for students for nearly 4 -5 years! UOC VC prof Stanley Wijesundara a world renown scientist was killed in College House by insurgents.during this time. So 87 was the birth of insurgency /JVP that ruined 4 years of Youth . Many went abroad for studies like now!
