Hi everybody, first of all Wish ya'll a Happy New Year... Me Avurudda Samayen Sathutin piruna avuruddak wenna kiyala prarthana karanawa!!
Ok, lets get to the main intention of the thread.. Here is a short and quick review from my perspective about Sri Lanka's ODI performance from the past year! And you are always welcome to add your comments!!
Sri Lanka started the Cricketing calender on the 3rd of January and coincidence or not they started the year and also end it with New Zealand in New Zealand and further more they started and ended the year losing to NZ both matches.... NZ batting 2nd in both occasions (At least in different venues)
And for Sri Lanka the year's most successful event was undoubtedly the white wash against England in England, when all the while SL was regarded as poor performers out of SL, they proved that's entirely wrong! They were able to sustain the momentum they gained from the great draw and the win from the earlier test matches against England!
Though they entered into ICC cup heads high (even considered favorites to win it), SL did not managed to surpass South Africa due to poor batting performance!
Talking about the find of the year, I think most would agree with me if I say the names of Upul Tharanga and Lasith Malinga. I personally think these two players will stay in the team for a long time to come and also will play a vital role in the upcoming World Cup in Caribbean!
Upul Tharanga now have played 37 ODIs and scored 1350+ runs with an average of of 38.77 and this includes 6 centuries and 5 half-centuries, he also boasts a srtike rate of almost 77% and currently sits in the 20th position of best ODI batsmen. 2006 in particular was a good year for him as he played 26 matches with an average of over 44, and 5 of his 6 centuries also were recorded this year as he created a record for most consecutive centuries made by a batsmen in ODIs!
Lasith Malinga the "Slinger" on the other hand cruising along and able to secure the 27th position of best ODI bowler by grabbing 34 wickets in 23 matches with an average of almost 34 runs per wicket, and 30 of those wickets were taken in 2006 playing 18 matches in the year! with a career economy rate of just under 5 runs per over!
Among other milestones, Sri Lanka was able to steal the crown again as the nation who has the most runs in an ODI, playing against Netherlands...... and after successful tour of England Mahela Jayawardene was named as the captain of the year.
So to sum up............ here is Sri Lanka's performance as a team in 2006
Played: 36
Won: 19
Lost: 15
No result: 2
Winning percentage: 56%
Highest Score: 443 vs. Netherland
Lowest Score: 130 vs. Pakistan
Batting average (of runs per wicket): 33.8
Bowling average (of runs conceded per wicket taken): 29.9
Runs scored per 6 balls faced: 5.41
Runs conceded per 6 balls bowled: 4.93
Current ODI ranking: 5
I think overall winning percentage is over 50% is acceptable but would be better if had been more closer to 60, and if Sri Lanka managed a white wash in NZ they could have easily moved to number 3 spot in the current ODI rankings... but today was just not that day it seemed!!! Anyway.... I wish all the players a job well done in England and I wish they can play much better Cricket in 2007 and hopefully bring the WORLD CUP back to Sri Lanka as it has been 10 years since we last held one
GO LIONS!!!
Thank you!
