As with the new 3 Series Convertible, the M3 Convertible now makes use of a three-piece lightweight steel retractable hardtop, eschewing the soft top used on the last three generations of M3 drop-tops.</p><p>Like its M3 cousins, the convertible is powered by BMW's 4.0-liter V-8 making 414 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque at 3900 rpm, and it races from 0 to 62 mph in 5.3 seconds, according to BMW. Mated to the engine is a six-speed manual transmission or BMW's new seven-speed Double Clutch Gearbox.</p><p>The Double Clutch Gearbox was designed specifically for high performance cars like BMW's M line and comes with a number of customizable settings. Launch Control helps get all 414 horses to the ground effectively while five shift programs in the automatic mode and six shift programs in the sequentially shifted manual mode assure drivers get exactly the response they want.</p><p>The M3's visual add-ons translate beautifully to the convertible body, even without the gorgeous backgrounds featured in BMW's press photos. The convertible gets a revised suspension to handle the weight shifts that come with the hardtop that opens in 22 seconds. Torsional stiffness on the convertible has been "significantly improved," BMW says. Although the front axle assembly remains unchanged, on the rear axle, the V-bars have been extended to the side sills.</p><p></p><p></p><p>lectronic Damper Control (EDC) will be optional on the newest M-car. It adjusts damper forces electrohydraulically, controlling the convertible's yaw and roll motions, and responding to different driving styles.</p><p>To optimize the convertible's top-down motoring, the M3 has a standard wind deflector and a special air conditioning unit that can adjust air flow based on the temperature inside and outside the car, as well as how much sunshine is reaching the car's interior, which is offered in four colors of Novillo leather.</p><p>The M3's mission has never been strictly about straight-line performance, but with the 335i convertible just a few ticks behind the M3 convertible from 0-62 mph, we wonder if the difference between the two cars is significant enough to convince some buyers to stick to a well-optioned 3 Series Convertible.</p><p>Then again, with the 335i convertible starting at $49,875 and the M3 Convertible expected to start just below $60,000, the balance and cachet of owning a M3 Convertible (plus the new seven-speed gearbox) will probably be more than enough for BMW to have a line of buyers ready when the convertible eventually reaches our shores.
