Jayasuriya set to join Sachin as most capped ODI player

    By Tushar Trivedi

    1. This is the third ODI to be played at the Providence Stadium, Guyana.

    2. England beat Ireland by 48 runs in the last match played over here on March 30.

    3. West Indies and Sri Lanka have played each other 42 times in ODIs but only Brian Lara has scored over 1000 runs in the contest between these two sides. For Sri Lanka, Sanath Jayasuriya has scored 807 runs in 29 matches so far.

    4. This will be Sanath Jayasuriya’s 384th ODI. Thus he will equal the record for most ODI appearances. Sachin Tendulkar has also played 384.

    5. If Jayasuriya concedes 7 runs in this match, he will become the second bowler to have given away more than 800 runs against West Indies after Muttiah Muralitharan (813). Courtney Walsh has conceded 673 runs (most for West Indies Vs Sri Lanka).

    6. If Jayasuriya bowls 52 balls, he will become the 3rd bowler to have bowled 1000 balls in WI-SL ODIs. Muttiah Muralitharan (1317) and Courtney Walsh (1108) are the other two.

    7. Russel Arnold of Sri Lanka needs 92 runs to complete 4000 runs in ODI. He has scored 3908 runs in 173 matches at an average of 35.85.

    8. Jerome Taylor requires three wickets to complete 50 wickets in ODIs. He has taken 47 wickets in 32 matches so far.

    9. Kumar Sangakkara needs one stumping to reach the 50 stumpings mark in his ODI career.

SWOT - Sri Lanka vs West Indies

    SWOT - Sri Lanka

Strengths: A team with tremendous self-belief and hunger, the Sri Lankan batting is in the safe hands of Jayasuriya, Tharanga, Sangakkara, Jayawardene, Silva and Dilshan. Muralidaran remains the world's best spinner. Malinga has emerged as their most potent weapon, who can change the match in an over.

Weaknesses: Relatively few, but Sri Lankan batsmen have exhibited trouble coping with constant pressure, as the South Africans revealed.

Opportunities: Winning this one and possibly another against one of the A teams will book Lanka a semis spot, if they can overwhelm Ireland.

Threats: West Indies always play well when their backs are to the wall.

    SWOT - West Indies

Strengths: Lara remains the greatest inspiration and strength. Paceman Darren Powell has struck in his opening spell throughout ICC CWC 2007. Sarwan and Samuels are showing positive signs.

Weaknesses: Gayle is just not firing, the middle order crumbles at the first sign of pressure and bowlers don't seem to back each other. Amidst all this, Lara's under fire for his strategy and tactics.

Opportunities: West Indies have had a poor start to the Super Eights, losing both their matches. If they win this one, they're in the running again for a semis spot.

Threats: Sri Lankans are in awesome form and are very hard to kill. If West Indies slip initially, they will find themselves on a slippery slope.

Update:The weather man at Guyana does not have the best of news for us. We had quite a bit of rain here early in the morning and even on the last night. The conditions are dark and the covers are on for safety measures. It is very overcast here in the middle. What we can do the most is pray that the clouds clear away.
