The Apple iPhone Comes To South Korea and Sells 60K Units In Its First Day

Well Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) continued to expand its Asian footprint with the debut launch of the iPhone 3GS in South Korea, one of the last countries in the region to get the phone. Based on feedback from retailers it looks like the device, which is available through KT Corporation ((ADR) NYSE: KTC), the country’s number two mobile carrier, had a successful roll-out with about 60,000 units sold on its first day. That figure represents about 15% of the total number of smartphones that were sold in the country (400,000) in all of the third quarter so that appears pretty promising.
In spite of the fact that the Korean market offers one of the most advanced set of mobile products and services in the world, smartphones only represent about 1% of the total mobile market. Executives at KT believe that the introduction of the iPhone could be a turning point for smartphones in Korea.
“We’re hoping that this iPhone will be a trigger point for the smartphone market in Korea.”
– Yang Hyun-mi, Chief Strategy Officer, KT’s
The introduction of the iPhone also represents a shift away from the previous dominance of the South Korean mobile market by local cell phone makers such as Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (SEO: 005930) and LG Electronics Inc. (SEO: 066570) which had benefited from government regulations that heavily restricted foreign handset makers.
Last november 7th iPhone was launched in saudi arabia and 25.000 units sold out in two days, yet we were waiting for the arrival of the new stocks,
