7 Billion Baby @ Philippians
5 babies born at Castle Hospital coinciding with the world population reaching 7 billionMonday, 31 October
The world population reached seven billion at midnight yesterday.
Since the baby born within the first SECOND after 12 midnight yesterday would have been the person who completes the seven billion of world population, functions had been organised throughout the world for welcoming him or her.
The UN Population Fund carried out an important role with regard to this.
The UN Population Fund implemented a programme with regard to this under the theme "Let's live together since the world of seven billion is concerned about one another”.
Accordingly the programme includes an arrangement for felicitating the first child born in the main maternity hospital in every country throughout the world.
The hospital selected for this purpose in this country was the women's hospital in Colombo Castle Street.
Accordingly within the first minute after 12 midnight yesterday five babies were born at the Castle hospital Colombo.
The Castle hospital said that baby girls and baby boys were among these.
An award function for felicitating these babies and other babies born this dawn is scheduled to be held at the hospital under the patronage of Health Minister Maitripala Sirisena this forenoon.
The world's seven billionth person will be born today into what UN leader Ban Ki-moon calls a "world of contradiction" -- and facing an uphill battle if it is on the wrong side of the poverty line.
According to the UN secretary general, however, the seven billion day is no laughing matter.
The birth of the 7 billionth baby should be seen as a "clarion call to action," he insisted.
An extra billion people have been added to the world's population since just after midnight on October 12, 1999 when the United Nations named a Bosnian baby, Adnan Mevic, as the Earth's six billionth inhabitant.
With about two babies being born every second, the seven billion figure will keep racing ahea
