They have reached the standpoint that a common candidate should be nominated for a forthcoming presidential election states the JVP. The leader of the group of Parliamentarians of the JVP Anura Dissanayeke said this today (16th) at a media meeting held at the head office of the JVP at Pelawatta.

Mr. Dissanayake said, “The Central Committee of the JVP has come to the standpoint that a common candidate should be nominated at a forthcoming presidential election. A common candidate is not a candidate that would get the support of only the JVP. This common candidate should be supported not only by our party but other parties as well. Hence, we have decided to discuss regarding the common candidate with all other political parties. The Central Committee has decided to have discussions with all other parties and come to an agreement with them during this week.

Abolishing the executive presidency within a very short period would be the task of this common candidate. The Constitutional Councils should be established and independent commissions under it should be established. An intensive programme regarding internally displaced people should be prepared. Also, the legal proceedings regarding Tamil youths who have been arrested should be stepped up. We are having discussions with individuals who agree to such conditions,” added Mr. Dissanayake.

Speaking further Mr. Dissanayake said, “The JVP made use of complex situations in the country to bring victories to the Motherland. In 2001 the People’s Alliance government became unstable due to a no-confidence motion brought against it. The JVP put forward the probationary government concept. It is through this probationary government that the 17th amendment was passed in the Parliament. Also there was a clash between the executive system and Ranil’s Parliament. The country became unstable again. We used this clash to stop Ranil’s path to sustain separatism. At the Presidential election Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse had doubts about his victory as the SLFP had deserted him. We came forward. The JVP made use of any political instability in the country to bring victory to the Motherland. Similarly, the JVP would use the present unstable situation to bring a political victory to the Motherland.”

Mr. Chandrasena Wijesinghe, Member of the Political Bureau of the JVP too participated at the media meeting.
