i don't have any idea about BIT and FIT. I also worked very hard to get into IT field so I wish you success and hope someone will help you get the information you need. anyway if you need academical info. like where to find resources, e-books or some help in that way, you can let me know. Hope you work very hard. The results will be so satisfying. I can tell you that for sure.

I strongly urge you to do A/Ls and try and get in to the university. Sure, you can get a programming job after taking a course like BIT and some other professional certification exams like SCJP, MCSE, CCNA etc.. But if you really want to go beyond the level of a normal software developer, then you'll need a degree. You might regret your decision later. So think twice before you go any further..

ah u dont know about FIT??? it the exam that i have to finish to get qulification to BIT coz i ddnt done ALz

    Oh i see...:D
Anyway BIT is not a good degree to work @ IT Firm. And nowadays they don't care about Degrees. They Don't want any Coders. They just want Programme designers. So If can do SLIIT 4 year degree, Do it... Otherwise try to get some professional qualification like SCEA(Java) or CCIE(cisco) or any M$ certification.

Hell yeah, If you don't have money and wanna do IT related job, do A/L and select to Mora or colombo IT faculties. Thats free & all the IT firms give more priority to get local university students :baffled:

I studied in Australia. I did my first year in Sri Lanka at ACBT and last two in Aus. I just finished my bachelors last December. You don't have to go to Australia to study IT. It's just a choice I made. You can learn pretty much the same things now in Sri Lankan universities in open courses.

Well, first do some research about what field you want to follow. That's what I did first. I started by talking with people I know, who are already working in the IT field. Also googled and looked at courses offered by universities and tried to understand what kind of career paths they offer.

It's not easy to decide which path you want to take within the IT field when you first start. But you naturally get to know what you want in a while as you continue.

My advice is do some research and select a field you love. For example when I started my course three years ago, I thought I wanted to be a software developer or a programmer. Coz programming was somehing I loved for a long time and I have been doing some programs on my own. But after like one and half years, my interest changed to Networking and Security studies. This is because our course had several networking subjects in the first year. And when I did them, I found that I really liked them. It also had some business subjects in them. When I did them I found out that I really hated them :P . Like that you'll know what you will want eventually.

the reason why I tell anyone to select a field they enjoy is that, it will be their love and passion for the field that will keep them going. It's easy to study when you like it isn't it? Like you I didn't enjoy A/Ls. But I really enjoyed studying IT.

    - So do some research, pick a good course. try to talk to people who have finished your course already to see if they found the course useful.

    - Then start your studies, you'll get many kinds of subjects. Programming, networking, database management etc.. this will help you identify what you like the most. also remember it's really useful to have some knowledge in every area. it makes you attractive to employers coz you can handle anything.

    - While studying save some money. I had to work hours and hours part time just to save for living. Use some of the saved money to do some Industrial exams like Ciso or Microsoft exams. If you want to be a software developer, there are set of microsoft certifications for that. If you want to be a networking or security guy, there are microsoft, ciso, linux etc. certifications for that. these really give you competitive advantage. and remember those certifications are identified all around the world. you don't have to spend thousands of money going to classes to do the exams. A friend of mine in Sri Lanka did CCNA exam recently. And he paid money only for the exam. He studies using Train Signal videos (http://www.trainsignal.com/) that he downloaded from torrent. He did practical using the packet tracer software. And he passed the first time. So you see my friend, the only thing you need determination.

    - Finally, keep working hard and enjoy what you are doing. Have an open eye at the job market. read job ads. and understand what kind of qualifications they are asking for. hav a plan for your future and career. read online stuff and books related to your field to broaden your knowledge.

This is just to give you an idea from my experiences. Wish you the best.

What you say have truth. But mchn, for some people doing A/L and getting selected to university is very hard. Passing Maths, Bio,Commerce.. for some is a tough job. But true if they get through, it's great. Then they can get into a uni. and select IT for studies.

But for others, do you have any recommendation for an external course?

Have heard SLITT is good. Don't know for sure. I also don't know how expensive it is. ACBT was definitely expensive back then.
