anusha: where is Barclays? i guess its some where in bamba? it would be easy for me to go there. and what if i can expand my budget to something like 120, 000 LKR :P what would you change in the setup? it will take me approx 3 months to get the funds(120...) so you assume that i will be buying it after three months.

gayannr: sorry again for been a noob :P but whats it with asus boards? are they better? if my budget is something like 120, will you change anything that you have suggested?

thanks people :)

ps: after all getting a new rig is not a easy thing at all!!! :D
Barclays is in Unity Plaza, just as you go up in the escalator.

If you increase the budget to 120k,
then you can get:
E6750
4GB RAM (got for 2GBx2 instead of 1GBx4 even if it is a tad expensive...4 sticks can give stability issues)
Gigabyte G33 DS3 board (for more info, contact dpg - GB DS3 boards are superb!)
8600GT (8800 series is still too much :()
500GB HDD (around 15k at Barclays: your choice though)
19" Samsung LCD

These should bring it down to around 110k. Then add a PSU + Case. If you want the other components, make the HDD smaller.

If you feel 4GB is overkill, go for 2GB - two sticks always! But remember, if you ever want to upgrade to 4GB, then you might have to face the problem of installing 4 sticks. I have 4 sticks. Though it works ok, I had to lower the previous overclock considerably to get it to work with 4 sticks. Also, remember if you wanna see the full 4GB of RAM, you need to use a 64bit operating system.

Since you used to be a Linux fan, and maybe you are intending to use Linux on this PC, so you do your own research about the 64bit-ness. On Windows end, you have to use Vista x64 edition, as XP x64 is a haunted with compatibility issues. Vista x64's main problem is drivers, so try to buy compatible peripherals. (all the motherboard components should have the proper drivers and VGAs have too)

AFAIK both P35-DS3R&Ps r out of stock. :(
for him, a G33 would be good enough. but it is his choice :D
maybe a P35 foxconn would do the trick (if he can find one)

Hi! :) wow lots of nice info! thanks.

RAM:
well i would like to have more but still, i don't want to touch vista just yet :baffled: so i guess i'll stick with 32bit. and with 2GIG ram.

what about DDR3? are they available in the market yet? i saw some where that they are available... ? is it better to stick to DDR2 for now?

and should i ask for a specific speed? or do they sell you the highest available speed? ::confused:

ps:Yes i am still a big fan! i use ubuntu on my lap... but it can't go with the latest main stream games.. :(

btw all most all of the linux distros have 64bit variants... although i haven't tried any.

i read some where about SATA2 drives, and it seems that they are really speedy. is SATA2 drives are the norm in lk? if not is it a good idea to buy one?

and if i am to feel a bit crazy and to overclock!, will it void the suggested mboards/CPU's warranty?

and what about AMD processors, some sites have said that they are good for 3D stuff?

and will a normal casing be ok for these stuff that i am going to buy? :)

sorry for asking so many questions!:P
thanks!

DDR3 2GB RAM is well over USD200. DDR2 is only about Rs.5500. Go figure :P

Those cheap DDR2s run at a speed of 667MHz. 800MHz ones are expensive. You don't need them unless you are really pushing your overclock up, for every 0.1 FPS you can get from the games :P

Ok, you don't have to touch Vista. You can have 4GB RAM and use XP 32bit, but the PC will only see 3GB or 3.25GB. It is a well worth an investment IMHO. You'll move to 64bit one day.

I know Linux Distros have 64bit versions, but you never know what is "wrong" with them until you try them out.

If you MENTION that your overclocked, it will void you warranty. Just make sure not to mention that. And by any chance if you have to go replace the mobo for some fault or anything, just reset the BIOS defaults and you should be fine. However, this should be only applicable to the CPU. I mean, mobo's are made for overclocking so it you overclock, it shouldn't void warranty for the mobo. Just the CPU...and only if they find out ;)

All these new models are SATA2. If you want to be safe, go fro really big drives because new drives are big and that means SATA2 (most of the times). But SATA2 doesn't improve performance much on conventional drives. Maybe a tad on the new PMR drives. I'm not sure if they are available here yet. Even the 500GB Samsung drive I bought recently is a conventional drive with horizontal recording.

None of the AMD processors can beat Intel these days. If you want the bet, go for Intel. Period!

A normal casing will be small...like I have it. It's pathetic...low ventilation and it's quite stuffed up. I mean, I had to freaking waste 30 minutes to install that new drive! I hardly can't move my hadn inside it. Buy a big case, if possible.

ok then i will get 4GB DDR2 speed 667 ram(2GB x 2 sticks) [KVR667D2N5/2G]
got it off barclays web site...

but i can't seems to find the 8600 there :(

i wanted to ask thsi about processors... well it seems that barklays have core 2 quad Q6600... is it worth to buy this? i know that many apps and games can't right now take advantage of 4 cores... so is it worth the extra 13, 10 thousand?

and don't we have stuff like E8500 here? i mean i really don't know whether its good or not but... its the highest one in the intel's chart of core 2 duos :P

now the RAM and the vga is fixed.... need to get hold of the cpu... please tell me why u made the choice for a E6750 ? i am sure you had a golden reason for that... can it be overclocked easily to something like E6850? :P hehe just wondering...

thanks :)

Do you WANT a quad or NEED a quad? Which ever is the answer, can you afford one? :P (I would personally NOT buy a Dual Core again, because I already have one ) Check THIS out anyway.

I don't know what's available here in Sri Lanka, but the E8xxx to be found here is....like...NO WAY! lol

E6750 is the fastest dual core cpu you can find here (AFAIK), and higher the multiplier, easier to overclock. You can of course save another Rs.2000 and go for E6550. Rs.2000 or 333MHz + higher overclocking potential? Your choice.

what do you think about the
hey one more thing (sorry sorry!) i read this thing at http://www.tomshardware.com/2008/02/...008/page3.html

they are talking about this card, Radeon 3850 256 MB for ~170USD(so i guess its like 20 here? if its is here)... and it says

Quote:
The Radeon 3850 delivers Geforce 8800 GTS 320mb performance for $100+ less.

what do you think about it?

thanks!

but i really didn't wanna read it. none of those cards can be found in SL. even if you do, you will have to pay with an arm and a leg to own one. (unless of course you have a relative abroad :D)
 shit someone once told me that everything you find in other countries you can also find here in SL as long as its PC parts.... yeah right!

do you know any place where i can try and find that motherboard you suggested? i looked in to the barkley's online store... and some other sri lankan online stores... but none of em have it...

its a shame that neat, PC house don't have an online shop or at least a price list

all those websites are junk. they don't update them. you will have to go there and ask. that's the only way. calling wouldn't help much either, because the next day you go, it won't be there. :P (probably it was never there )

don't buy from NEAT or PC House. They crappiest places in whole Sri Lanka, even worse than colombo slums

just get from Barclays or from EPSI. those are the only place it trust. i haven't had any experience with NuNet though.
