This is a true story with real names.
In the religion of God there is but one say, “The Lord is My Shepherd” but also there is a saying of pastors “I am your Shepherd, You are my Sheep”. All in all, simply the Shepherd is responsible for the actions of his/her flock. The Shepherd’s duty towards the flock is to guide them in the correct path and protect them. But what if the Shepherd is clouded by jealousy and hate? Who will guide them and save them of there own destruction?
You see Jesus wanted people to enjoy, it is clearly seen in the Bible. But a pastor hating a 17 year old is just plain stupid. Jesus loved children, personally I do too. They are the future of this world. And there enjoyment is our enjoyment.
But on December 31st 2007, I saw men of God turn into men of Satan. There is a Pentecostal Church (also known as the Kings Church) at No. 29, 6th Lane, Rawatawatte, Moratuwa, which the land is the former property of Mr. Claude Amerasinghe (A prestigious member of the Lion’s Club). The name of the pastor is Pastor Tyronne Welei, A pastor who did a second marriage by force.
The church is well known as the Wellei’s Church. By nationality Tyronne is a Tamil who calls himself a Sinhalese but is married to an African Negro woman (personally, he doesn’t belong to either).
On December 31st 2007, the house next door to the church was about to have a party (with lights and decorations all setup) for there disabled son (an enjoyment for a worthy child). I watched them light fire crackers and indeed it made me remember my past teenage life where I was the same. I noticed the pastor standing outside the church gate which was strange as a pastor is suppose to be inside the church at the service time. Then a few minutes later I heard some kind of fight (it was 12:17AM), as I went out to see what it was about I saw a horrible sight. The men from the church started beating the children in the middle of the road. And the children started running towards our house. All I could hear was “Uncle don’t hit us, we are still school children”. As these men chased the children to the junction down the road two of them had knuckles, and one had a bicycle chain. At this moment a lot of people got out and started hitting those men, sadly I didn’t (I’m too old for it). As the men ran back to the church building the children kept running down the road but the disabled child returned back home to find another mob of people surrounding them and arguing with them.
Now the first thing that comes to mind is why such an event would take place. The answer happened everyday. The pastor’s son and his friends played cricket from 11PM to 1AM everyday (yes the time is correct). And family in that house apposed it. Obviously who wouldn’t? How can one sleep when men are screaming “OUTTTTT!” during the night and the next day screaming the song “Trading My Sorrows” for church service?
Now the question comes. Why is the pastor’s son playing cricket? Because he has done and failed the G.C.E. (O/L) four times in a row. Simple but adequate answer I suppose.
Around two hours later at around 2:30AM on 1st of January 2008 the child in the house was arrested. The charge was “Cutting people with a sword”. Now I’m asking a really stupid question here. Who would cut the people next door with a sword and stay at home?
Later, I heard some shocking news, the disabled Childs friends (those who were at the party) had gone to the police and told that they where also present and got themselves arrested. Personally, I have never seen such unity but there it was, proof that our society was something more than what it seems. But however the Pentecostal Church pressed on the case and the disabled child and the other children (11 in Total) were sent to Welikade prisons disregarding that they where 17 year olds (A moneyed church can do wonders these days) Finally the church promised to withdraw the case but only after taking Rs. 5000/- from each child saying “otherwise we would have to settle this in court”. Some of the children did not even have a house and didn’t even have money to pay. One family pawned the house (a shack) to pay the money. I ask you! is this a church?
The pastor has called a meeting with the families involved and he has said that if his “Vadakarayo” was there that day, there would be a murder! And that he knew there was an argument outside the church and that he did not want to stop it because if people get hurt they would be taken to hospital and if people died they would be buried. Are these words coming out of a pastor? Or a man with a depression? What is the point of a pastor who would put ONE church service over the tears of 11 families.
I heard the next door people were forced to leave the premises as a part of the agreement to stop the court case.
The court case was withdrawn on March 7, 2008. And all charges against the children were withdrawn.
Soon after the people next door to the church left the house for good (they left within two weeks), the 1AM cricket stopped. And I wonder why they played it exactly until they left. I do believe it is because the disabled child was a very smart boy who helped a lot of people. An uneducated person would always hate an educated person (Jealousy) and an uneducated son’s father would always hate an educated son’s father.
Funny thing is, I checked the registration records of the church residence and it seems they have registered Pentecostal Assemblies of Sri Lanka as a Business.
I always say, you cannot have religion without commitment. Pentecostal’s Enjoy Religion, but remember, enjoyment does not open your heart, sorrow does. This is the difference between a singing a song and singing a hymn. This is the difference between saying prayer and screaming through a loud speaker.
A pastor should never have a family because like what happened here he would have a jealousy issue. Because one would always try to make the things of his own better than others. This is logic! Human nature. This is the exact reason why a Reverent does not marry. The bible speaks logic, Jesus said; If you want to join me leave everything behind. Those who don’t can never be fit to be a true shepherd of the flock.
Some people even dub this as a “Nationality issue” (Tamil Vs. Sinhalese) this is because the pastor attempted to hide his nationality (saying he is Sinhalese). Well not a surprise! The head office of the Ceylon Pentecostal Mission is located in Tamil Nadu, India.
