After the Thoppigala take-over by our Armed Forces, a long held opinion of the UNP that our Armed Forces cannot inflict defeat on LTTE terrorists has been shattered. Defeat of LTTE terrorists at Thoppigala is by no means the end of the story and our Armed Forces are continuing the operations to consolidate and unify terrorist held areas both in the North and East-is this an easy operation? Not at all!
During the last 5-6 months, the UNP leader Ranil Wickramasinghe has been doling out venomous attacks targeting the “Medmulane Clan” of the Rajapakse family thinking that by resorting to low down political tactics, he will be able to destabilize the incumbent government. So far, he and the UNP have failed to achieve their ends of giving hand-outs to the terrorists who have wreaked havoc in this country for 30 years with their blood-thirsty onslaughts on innocent civilians in all parts of the country, as well as government institutions and officials.
For the UNP to achieve their agendas, they need to keep on finding new targets to hit at. Next they tried to involve the Mangala-Sripathie duo, into a major mud-slinging campaign with the intention of splitting the SLFP and weakening it. Inspite of all these demoralizing campaigns mainly hoping to demoralize the government and the Armed Forces, our soldiers have moved forward and made significant achievements in the right direction of eliminating the terrorists.
The UNP leader exposed his anti-Buddhist agenda already during the 2001-2004 period when he was Prime Minister by appointing a Cabinet of Ministers comprising of over 60% non-Buddhists. With a previously discussed agenda with the Churches and the Internationa Democratic Union(IDU), he let things boil into a situation of open antagonism against Buddhists and Hindus in this country. All this was done while visiting Buddhist temples and duping Buddhist Clergy into thinking that he was truly a pious Buddhist-one had to only look at his right hand to see the number of “Pirith Nool” tied round his wrist to check that out. However, there is a saying “ you can fool some of the people all the time, some of the people some of the time but not all the people all the time!” His “true allegiance” to the Buddha Sasana was amply exposed recently when he resigned from the Dayake Sabha of Gangaramaya Temple merely because Podi Haamuduruwo dared to speak out about his shortcomings and unpatriotic gestures. Soon after that his beauty queen UNP confidante Rosy Senanayake has gone on record as saying that Sri Lanka must shed its Sinhala-Buddhist identity! This is by no means “an accident” even though you may go back and deny such utterances. It is a well known fact that this beauty queen is an avowed Evangelist. Purely to serve the requirements of a minority, a country cannot throw away its cultural and religious heritage just as much as we cannot expect America or UK to make Islam their State Religion or The Vatican to accept Evangelism with open arms. In the same way, Sri Lanka cannot shed the Sinhala-Buddhist identity whether we like it or not.
Bankrupt for new ideas to ridicule Buddhists in this country, now the UNP leader has begun to attack Bhikkus in the JHU and he has truly exposed his low down political mentality when he stated “Dusseela Samagama Budhu Dahama Vikunamin Vyapara Katayuthuwela Niratha Venawa” at a meeting of UNPers at Sirikotha, the UNP headquarters on 13th July 2007. His present topic for attack is the issue of Car Permits to JHU parliamentarian monks and the subsequent sale of those permits. The JHU has openly explained to the public what they did with the permits and why they did, what they did. One cannot understand how a decent “Old Royalist” like Ranil Wickramasinghe could become so short of arguments to substantiate his accusations when the only explanation he could give his listeners, according to the Lakbima report on 16th July 2007 states him saying “ Athuraliye Rathana Himiyo Toyota Landcruiser vaahanayak pavichchi karane bawath me vaahanaya nishpadanaye karanne Baudha ratak wene Japanaye bawath pawasu Ranil Wickramasinghe Mahatha, Benz nishpadane karanne Kristiyanuwan sitina ratawela yayde keeye.” What is the earthly reason for Ranil Wickramasinghe to drag religion and attempt to create a rift between Christianity and Buddhism when talking about vehicles, except to prove that he is short of arguments?
If the people of this country are to consider the current UNP and its leader to be decent politically, then it is time for the party members who are not as warped as he is, to put some sense into him, that Sri Lankans are looking for serious minded leaders and not “political jokers” as he is making himself out to look in the eyes of the public.
