Sri Lankan postmaster in UK sacked...again

A Sri Lankan sub-postmaster who lost his job after refusing to serve his customers unless they spoke English has been sacked from his new job as well, the UK media reported.
Deva Kumarasiri, 40, told his customers at Sneinton Boulevard post office in Nottingham that it was imperative they spoke English so he could understand them and stop queues building up.
After he went public with his demand, the Sri Lankan was forced to leave his post office and move to another in the city.
But when Mr Kumarasiri went in to work yesterday he was told by the agency that employed him that he had been replaced, the Telegraph reported.

Mr.Kumarasiri, you are not white enough to play white man's games. You lived almost 19 years in SL but you never fought for the rights of Sri Lankans and you never voiced against the crimes that LTTE committed on your own people( at least nothing as such has been reported about yourself) but you decided to champion the British whatever - for what? You may be thinking that you are British, and we know that you are proud of it but the fact of the matter is that "they" are not proud of YOU being British and not ready to accept you as one. So please, stop playing white and get on with life.

I was against wat Mr Deva did in my last comment in the earlier version of this news, but I think Deva has a point...how can someone serve if he cant understand, the place he works is highly ethnically diversified area (about 50+ ethnic groups)....Anyway i think Mr Deva bit too much also

This guy must be a real . Not listening to any of his superiors, Just Like SL. Where ever he goes he gets sacked.

I am sure that he would have turned out to be staunch supporter of the Hela Urumaya, if he stayed back in Sri Lanka.

So the UK is not English any more ? Looks like non-English speakers (mostly terrorists!) have already taken over the country. Shame, shame.

Adopt Urdu, Hindi, Arabic, Tamil and whatever her citizens speak as official languages in UK, so that there wont be this type of problem.

When U going to give 110% that will be the result! The message is "Just stick to the basics!"

There is such a thing as being more British than the British!!

He must be a real 'kalu sudda'!

This should be a very good example for all those insist speaking a single language, leaving their own rather any other language. Also this incident teaches us that we live in a plural linguistic global environment where no body can ignore the others simply speaking any other language than his own. We specially learn lessons from this incident as we know very well that Britain has developed and expanded in every spare of life because it used to respect the human kind irrespective of his/her language, race and religion.

Good for the fellow. As a Sri Lankan who would have also travelled to UK one should be more understanding when people struggle with English.

dm_comment.gif

While it is essential to a great extent to learn English in this time and day, it is utterly nonsensical to discriminate someone based on their inability to speak that language. Before Mr. Deva tries to be a an "adopted British citizen" he must understand some of these {so-called) Western values, that discrimination has no place (at least on paper) and that no one can "force" another person to learn an alien language, just because they are in a foreign country. This is what happens when some "kalu suddas" try to be more British than the native British themselves - the result is that they will have no identity at all.

dm_comment.gif

Marikkar: I will support your view if you ask the Arabic countries to tolerate other religious faiths also. Dont preach what you cannot practice.

I guess he has not changed his "Sinhala Only" attitude?

dm_comment.gif

THIS IS A VERY NARROW MINDED BEHAVIOUR FROM A SRI LANKAN WHO TRY TO BE TOO BRITISH.HE HAS TO CHANGE HIS ATTITUDE TOWARDS A WORLD WITH PEOPLE SPEAKING MANY LANGUAGES.STEP OUTSIDE OF ENGLAND AND GO TO GERMANY,FRANCE, AUSTRIA OR SWITZERLAND TO UNDERSTAND HOW THOSE COUNTRIES WORK,YOU GOT TO HAVE MULTILINGUAL SKILLS TO SURVIVE THESE DAYS.

Best way to proove yourself is sit for the IELTS and score good marks, atlease over 6 points, it is eligible level for top university in the UK

Mr kumarasiri if you wanna do business or work and that you know that you need to interact first think you learn there basic language.instead of telling them to learn .remember customer is the king!

dm_comment.gif

why sri lankan english is not good enough for him?

dm_comment.gif
Posted By: pom

Mr Kumarasiri seems to have forgotten that the people he was trying to impose his will on were his customers. At the end of the day, making a sale is important and a customer needs to be treated with dignity. Maybe some of our postmasters also should take note.

dm_comment.gif

This is a very good move. He should expel from England and should not be accepted by Sri Lanka.

dm_comment.gif

how can he serve a customer if he doesn't understand wat he/she is saying?

dm_comment.gif
Posted By: DMG

Language is just a tool of communication. No one should be deprived of basic rights, for not knowing a language. What will happen to dumb people as per this post-masters theory.

Are we not doing the same thing that Deva is doing, in Sri Lanka, by insisting that all speak Sinhalese when we go to most government offices. We are a country with ethnic diversity, where have we learnt to entertain our own ethnic languages. How many of us can understand and speak all three main languages of our own country ?

Sri Lanka
Continued............

It is a simple basic fact if you want to live in a foreign country and be a citizen of that country you should be willing to learn their language or get back home. However the stupid British who are interfering in affairs in other countries trying to be saviours of minorities can no longer stand by what is correct and face the reality. They are scared to openly admit this basic fact as they will not be able to interfere in other countries thereafter. I suggest, Deva let them clean their own s.... and live like every other foreigner living in UK. After all the British after plundering the resources of other countries for centuries are under obligation to serve the foreign nationals who have come there for the crimes they committed.

There is no law that tells British citizen as what language they must speak. This poor guy trying to be ignorant demanding people speak only English so he can do his job. What did he do to sri lanka when he had his free education health and others. Did he pay back rather than licking his masters. Now he knows he is not a white man.

dm_comment.gif

Mr. Deva Kumarasiri is nothing but a RACIALIST. For white people if you are not white, the rest is Black. Don't try to be a "Kalu Suddha" in a White coat!!

Did we all forget about the introduction of Sinhala only act and the implications of the acts.....Tamils now want independent and the rise of LTTE and the situation we are facing it today. At least Britain is mature enough to handle these silly language issues.

That's human nature. People are always try to show colors over other from whatever they have. Some people use money, power, cast..etc. This man has only English language knowledge, so he used it. Poor guy...

This is a good lesson for Sri Lankans migrating abroad. We have to realize that when we are in a foreign country irrespective of the time of stay or whether you are a citizen or not you will always be treated as a foreigner. Your real value as a human being is only at your own country. This is the reason why we should protect our country at any cost. If Kumarasiri was a white British national, results would be different

dm_comment.gif

If you cannot speak English, why you are living in U.K.? well done Kumarasiri, you bring fame and credit to our country.........

Becoming a British or any other European nationality is an illusion. When you are strong young and healthy, they need you to do dirty work. When you reach old age this white folks will treat you differently. Talk to an aged Asian man and ask the advice.Dont be a fool my fellow British, you find more comfort in your village where you were born.

dm_comment.gif

Is he trying to make this an ENGLISH ONLY world? Irrespective of the language people speak, he should have a polite attitude to serve his customers. Turn them away, is not the English Way of treating people. Sadly "This baka panditha Kalu Sudda didn't know that." Why didn't he change his name into English too? What if someone came to his post office and spoke to him in Sinhala? I would love to know his reaction in a situation like that. Dave Kamarshaw, please do not return to SL.

You guys are blasting Kumarasiri without knowing whats happening at your own back yard. If you go to any Gov office in Colombo and pretend to be a Tamil you will know how many Kumarasiris are here... The British employer of Kumarasiri sacked him will the SL Gov do it here???

I worked in hospitals and a old woman told me she went on her first holiday in a remote Islands but that was awful. I asked why and the answer was none of those people spoke English. I asked did you not try to learn their language before going there. She said that is too difficult. Similarly Deva had few options. Learn the other languages or go back to Sri Lanka or get a translator. I use the last option but Royal mail may not do that. So he left with two options. What he is doing is going for the easy option just like the old lady who want to teach English for a nation.

dm_comment.gif

English is a link language. That is why somebody needs to learn English as a secondary language.other thing is All information are given in ENGLISH.if somebody doesn't know ENGLISH properly,That he/she cannot rub shoulders with aliens.

Deva has a new role in UK's ultra national BNP. This is their man, As someone already said you may be proud you are British, But who gives what over here, You are an Asian, You should have minded your own business.

gune, whoever you are, it is shameful that you bring his cast to degrade him this shows how pathetic your character is.

dm_comment.gif

Suppose Deva Kumarasiri goes to China or to France and if Deva has to go to a Post Office to send a letter to his loved ones in Sri Lanka, has he got to learn to speak Chinese or French before queuing up. This is real stupidity of a Sri Lankan with nationalistic ideas which tarnishes the image of Sri Lanka too. When he returns to Sri Lanka, he would pretend not to know Sinhalese and may ask the barber to cut "koss" instead of "kess".

Poor fellow trying to get some attention from white British people. Should be sent to mental hospital.

dm_comment.gif

Deva my good man, if you ever return to Sri Lanka what will you do? We are trying to be a multi ethnic and multi religious and multi lingual nation!!

dm_comment.gif
Posted By: rosebud

This is purely ignorance. He was trying to impress the British forgetting that he has to perform a job. As a postmaster he should even communicate by sign language if he has to and help the customer. Poor fellow should be rehabilitated.

dm_comment.gif

It should be a good eye opener to Sri Lanka. The problem in UK is it is overtaken by immigrants Hindi Urdu etc. The way Hindi being used all over we won't able to use Sinhala soon

dm_comment.gif
Posted By: Sujith Senanayake

Seems to be nobody picked the point. The area he was working was full of tamils, indians and pakistanis... most of those people all ways speak their language which Mr Kumarasiri couldn't understand.. That's why he wanted them to speak in english..

dm_comment.gif
Posted By: Ajith Kadawata

Deva, Please do not call yourself a Sri Lankan. If you want to serve people you must be ready to serve any one irrespective of the language. If you want them to understand you, you better learn other languages. Shame on you.

dm_comment.gif
Posted By: MP

Guys, I think we should not get that excited over this. I am sure he would have served if some one spoke to him in Sinhala, but living in a foreign country my experience is that Sinhalese are the last to speak Sinhala if they know a bit of English. Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that he would have refused to serve the customers who spoke a language that he may not have understood. Fair enough. As far Gune, I reserve my comments.

dm_comment.gif

Mr Kumarasri, this kind of games would only work in countries like srilanka not in western word where every one is equally treated and have the same right regardless of language.

This is a true story. year 1981/82. Place Colombo. My boss an Englishman went to the office of Ceylon Customs to do some business. The clerk could not understand what the person was saying. So he took him to the chief clerk. He too could not understand. The chief clerk asked my boss. whether he could kindly speak English. "Asking an Englishman to speak English."
