Sri Lankan postmaster in UK sacked...again
A Sri Lankan sub-postmaster who lost his job after refusing to serve his customers unless they spoke English has been sacked from his new job as well, the UK media reported.
Deva Kumarasiri, 40, told his customers at Sneinton Boulevard post office in Nottingham that it was imperative they spoke English so he could understand them and stop queues building up.
After he went public with his demand, the Sri Lankan was forced to leave his post office and move to another in the city.
But when Mr Kumarasiri went in to work yesterday he was told by the agency that employed him that he had been replaced, the Telegraph reported.

Mr.Kumarasiri, you are not white enough to play white man's games. You lived almost 19 years in SL but you never fought for the rights of Sri Lankans and you never voiced against the crimes that LTTE committed on your own people( at least nothing as such has been reported about yourself) but you decided to champion the British whatever - for what? You may be thinking that you are British, and we know that you are proud of it but the fact of the matter is that "they" are not proud of YOU being British and not ready to accept you as one. So please, stop playing white and get on with life.

I am sure that he would have turned out to be staunch supporter of the Hela Urumaya, if he stayed back in Sri Lanka.

So the UK is not English any more ? Looks like non-English speakers (mostly terrorists!) have already taken over the country. Shame, shame.

Adopt Urdu, Hindi, Arabic, Tamil and whatever her citizens speak as official languages in UK, so that there wont be this type of problem.

This should be a very good example for all those insist speaking a single language, leaving their own rather any other language. Also this incident teaches us that we live in a plural linguistic global environment where no body can ignore the others simply speaking any other language than his own. We specially learn lessons from this incident as we know very well that Britain has developed and expanded in every spare of life because it used to respect the human kind irrespective of his/her language, race and religion.

Good for the fellow. As a Sri Lankan who would have also travelled to UK one should be more understanding when people struggle with English.

While it is essential to a great extent to learn English in this time and day, it is utterly nonsensical to discriminate someone based on their inability to speak that language. Before Mr. Deva tries to be a an "adopted British citizen" he must understand some of these {so-called) Western values, that discrimination has no place (at least on paper) and that no one can "force" another person to learn an alien language, just because they are in a foreign country. This is what happens when some "kalu suddas" try to be more British than the native British themselves - the result is that they will have no identity at all.

Marikkar: I will support your view if you ask the Arabic countries to tolerate other religious faiths also. Dont preach what you cannot practice.

I guess he has not changed his "Sinhala Only" attitude?

THIS IS A VERY NARROW MINDED BEHAVIOUR FROM A SRI LANKAN WHO TRY TO BE TOO BRITISH.HE HAS TO CHANGE HIS ATTITUDE TOWARDS A WORLD WITH PEOPLE SPEAKING MANY LANGUAGES.STEP OUTSIDE OF ENGLAND AND GO TO GERMANY,FRANCE, AUSTRIA OR SWITZERLAND TO UNDERSTAND HOW THOSE COUNTRIES WORK,YOU GOT TO HAVE MULTILINGUAL SKILLS TO SURVIVE THESE DAYS.

Mr kumarasiri if you wanna do business or work and that you know that you need to interact first think you learn there basic language.instead of telling them to learn .remember customer is the king!

why sri lankan english is not good enough for him?

Mr Kumarasiri seems to have forgotten that the people he was trying to impose his will on were his customers. At the end of the day, making a sale is important and a customer needs to be treated with dignity. Maybe some of our postmasters also should take note.

This is a very good move. He should expel from England and should not be accepted by Sri Lanka.

how can he serve a customer if he doesn't understand wat he/she is saying?

Language is just a tool of communication. No one should be deprived of basic rights, for not knowing a language. What will happen to dumb people as per this post-masters theory.

Are we not doing the same thing that Deva is doing, in Sri Lanka, by insisting that all speak Sinhalese when we go to most government offices. We are a country with ethnic diversity, where have we learnt to entertain our own ethnic languages. How many of us can understand and speak all three main languages of our own country ?
