Children In IDP Camps Get Special Attention For Children’s Day

Around 500 children representing North, East and all the other provinces in Sri Lanka will take part in this years International Children’s Day. Another 50 children from pre-schools and 25 children with special needs will also take part in this national ceremony.

The Child Development and Women’s Empowerment Ministry has made arrangements to celebrate International Children’s Day 2009 under the theme `Let us build a unified Nation for our children’, Child Development and Women’s Empowerment Minister Sumedha G. Jayasena said.

She said the national ceremony to mark the day will be held on October 1 at 9.00 a.m. at the Kularatne Hall, Ananda College, Colombo under the patronage of First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka.

Children will present various cultural items. Awards will be presented to the three best children’s societies in the country and winners of the literary competitions, she said.

According to the Ministry the International Children’s Day was also celebrated in four zones in Cheddikulam welfare villages with the participation of 3,000 children on 27th, 28th and 29th of September. Two hundred IDP children will visit the Dehiwela Zoo on October 1.

The sources also reveled that the first flag of the Flag Day to mark the Children’s day was held at Temple Trees by pinning it on the President.

The National Children’s Council will be declared on the same day.

The first set of books on Child Rights published using braille system and the hand book on `Child Adoption Law’ will be presented to President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

A CD made by the National Child Protection Authority on `Neglecting children’ will also be presented to the President on the same occasion.
