We heard this news yesterday, and as usual Free Media Mudalali's (FMM) jump up in the air, repeating the same Mantra. But curiously enough, AI seems not to be much "worried" about the recent terrorist attacks in Colombo, in particularly the one which killed 7 school children of the same school.
When performed a search for keyword "Sri Lanka" on AI official website, these are the results popping up. (Results may vary, based on the date you click on this link).
The media freedom story comes up on top, dated 5th February. But, there's nothing mentioned in AI website, about the killing 7 school children which took place on 4th February. There is a general article condemning the recent violence in Sri Lanka, but it's not saying anything about the school children, and it's not condemning the incident in particular. They gave a very low profile to the Fort railway station bomb, and didn't mentioned anything about the DSS students.
" On Sunday at least 11 people were killed in a suicide attack at the main railway station in Colombo"
But compared to this, in their press release on Sri Lankan press freedom, they go in to details of individual incidents mentioning even the names of journalist who were said to be attacked, condemning each of the incidents.
Reading through their press release on press freedom, gives us the idea that the main source of information for them should be the "Colombo based FMM".
"the Colombo-based Free Media Movement reported that five persons entered the Colombo home of Suhaib M Kasim, the associate editor of the Sri Lankan state-owned Tamil daily Thinakaran. They forcibly took him to his veranda and stabbed him in his abdomen."
And we have very good reasons to believe, even the below information was included in the AI press release, based on the information provided to them by the FMM
"Journalists in the South of the country also play an important role exposing corruption among politicians and the military."
People behind the FMM would have earned their "something" by selling these information to AI. Because, AI regularly needs this type of information, for their existence. And no NGO will provide anti-LTTE stories to the AI, because they seems to be paid by the LTTE, for not reporting.
