The ruins of many Mayan sites are very large. There are many areas that awaits further excavation and exploration. Others may be still covered in the jungles.
It's the "Egypt of the Americas".
We covered almost all the major sites, drove through and several internal flights to save time in last May 2024. Stayed for two and a half weeks or so. Only to Palenque we took a guided tour as the common consensus is NOT to drive alone in these areas. So took a tour from San Cristobal. They pick you up at 4AM from the hotel and drop you back around 11PM. About 25 vans travel one after the other. Once they start at 4AM the only stop is after coming out from the jungle in a small town for brekfast & toilet break at 7 AM.
