The governor of Illinois has been released on bond after being arrested for conspiring to sell an appointment to president-elect Barack Obama's recently open US senate seat.
Governor Rod Blagojevich and his chief of staff, John Harris, have been accused of trying to "induce purge of newspaper editorial writers," critical of him at the Tribune Company, the US attorney's office said in a statement on Tuesday.
Blagojevich, 51, appeared in court in sneakers and exercise clothes and made no comment as he posted a $6770 bond, an AFP journalist reported.
