Dear Randir,
Thank you for contacting PETA regarding the ritualistic killing of animals in Sri Lanka . Please be assured that we are doing all we can to challenge the government and local leaders regarding this barbaric ritual. As you know, we at PETA do not hesitate to target cruelty to animals for fear of offending others. Our view is that cruelty to animals must be challenged wherever it occurs, regardless of whether it is labeled as “tradition” or “culture.” Animal rights activists are changing people’s views and have succeeded in passing legislation that is improving—and saving—animals’ lives around the globe. The following are just a few examples:
· Fox hunting, a tradition in England and Wales , was banned in 2004.
· In 2004, Austria passed a strict cruelty-to-animals law that bans tail- and ear-cropping of dogs, prohibits circuses from using tigers and lions, and requires that hens live in free-range conditions.
· In November 2005, an animal rights bill was passed in Rome that calls for better treatment of all animal companions, including goldfish.
