While the country has been plunged into chaos following the multi-million rupee financial ‘Sakvithi’ scam, Negombo police yesterday started probing a similar institute that had paid depositors a monthly interest of 3%.
Negombo police Fraud Investigation Bureau initiated the probe following four complaints received against an institute called “Samajeeya Arthika Sahanaseva Hawula” in the Pulluhena area in Pamunugama.
Police spokesman Ranjith Gunasekara said the complainants had deposited around Rs.1.5million in the scheme and the institute had paid 3% as monthly interest.
The investigators are being carried out to verify whether the financial institute was operating under a proper registration from the Central Bank, he said.
Meanwhile, police have so far received more than 2,000 complaints in the alleged “Sakvithi Scam”.
