A policeman identified only as MA has been arrested for allegedly beating up his Sri Lankan housemaid last Saturday, according to police sources.

The 33-year old housemaid, JT, was rushed to the Umm Al Quwain Hospital by the police who were called in by MA's neighbours. JT, immediately after being allegedly assaulted by MA had run and locked herself in a bedroom. A little later, she escaped by jumping out of the bedroom window and screamed for help from passers-by in the neighbourhood.

RIYADH, 18 September 2007 — The wheels of justice would move too slow for a Sri Lankan woman who was rescued by Riyadh police after working for years in slave-like conditions: She now says she can’t wait around in the Kingdom for the legal process of suing her sponsor, and just wants to go home to be with her family.

“I don’t want to wait anymore for my dues from the employer,” said 40-year-old Anista Marie, who has been working in bondage since 1999 and is owed eight year’s worth of back pay from a Saudi woman with four teenage daughters. “I am desperate to see my children. I have not seen them for the past 10 years.”

If Marie signs away her so-called private rights to press charges against her sponsor, not only does she pose a good chance of losing eight years of her salary owed to her, but her sponsor may not face any punitive action.

Well, there should be some action taken against them... But the reality is macho... Even inside our country, sometimes there are situations where house maids are treated so badly.... So... I think the SL gov must take some action, to start new industries in SL... or givr those women some training and send them for industries... n so forth.... will not happen in a day or two... But if any action is taken now.. may be after 10 or 20 years... he he.. tht's planning.. ;)

Yes you are right machang.. but there is a difference between them treated badly in SL and outside SL.. If they were tortured or treated badly here, they always have options.. help is near and they can always complain or lodge a report or worse case can go home... but when they are in Saudi... its a totally different case altogether... "Naduth Hamuduruwange.. Baduth Hamuduruwange" where to go machang? whom to tell... they'll just spit at you... this is what happens...and in their eyes our women are just bloody slaves that's it...

Some of these women actually have to convert to Islam there in order to feel secured... but they just don't tell these stories after coming back home!!!

And the problems with Sri Lankan diplomatic missions around the world,continues... they do not involve in these matters as they should be... (that's why LTTE's propaganda against Sinhalese and Sri Lankans are prospering out side SL)
