We are doing a project which involve the use of Rabbit microprocessors. Don't worry, I'm not asking about them, because I don't think you know about them at all.
We have to use a development board to program that processor (u plug in the Rabbit processor to it, power it up, connect to the PC, use the software and flash!)
The development board connects to the PC via serial port. We can choose which port (COM1 or whatever and the speeds as well) in the IDE (for this we have to use a proprietary IDE from Rabbit inc, and we have to use the programming language called Dynamic C, which is very close to C) Again, I'm not gonna ask you about this.
So the problem is this.
When I install the IDE (programming environment) and plug the development board at campus in any of the PCs, everything works. I can program and everything works as it should.
But when I plug the board in my PC or in my dad's PC at home, it says no Rabbit processor found.
See, my motherboard is Asus P5B-E and dad's motherboard is Intel DG965RY. Both do not have the serial port on the back panel. I had to find a serial cable and plug it into the COM port headers on the mobo to use the COM port.
Also, COM1 is enabled in BIOS and is enabled in Windows. I can open the port using hyperterminal (or something like that) This means, the COM drivers are installed and I can use it. Just that the signals are not coming from the Rabbit processor to the PC serial port.
Both of the PCs were running Vista. The PCs at campus run XP.
So I thought maybe it was because of Vista, and I installed XP in dad's PC and still it gave the same error. (i.e. "No rabbit processor detected")
I checked the contacts of the serial cable and the contacts are good. I even installed the cable wrong way to see if it would make a difference, at least giving a different error code. Nope, it is same.
My friend who is in the same project group has a Foxconn 45cms mobo (945 chipset) and XP and it works there out of the box. Just install the software, plug in the board, and you are in business!
WTF is wrong with this picture? I still don't understand why they wouldn't work at our place!
Any ideas? (Don't tell me our house is cursed)
