Failure of 16U2 or CH340 has never made the board unrecognizable for me. Maybe it's because my computer has already recognized it before it failed. Everytime I connect the board it comes up in the device manager. But in your case I have never had a board DOA. So I don't know. But it's usually you cannot communicate via that processor anymore. CH340 is what I prefer because it is very easy to replace them with a soldering iron and a hot air gun. You should have a good UNO as a spare (So you can use Arduino as ISP) and you should do all the testing on a Mini or a Uno copy. Or you should have a seperate programmer. Just buy an arduino Mini with a builtin CH340</p></blockquote><p></p>
