The Sri Lankan military has launched a massive operation throughout the country to rope in an estimated 40,000 army deserters, a senior official said today.
Military spokesperson Major General Ubaya Mediwala said several special teams had already been deployed, and arrests of the deserters would take place shortly.
He added that a high percentage of deserters were known to be in the North-Central, Southern and Uva Provinces, while other areas would also be targeted in the search.
