The military today gained control of the Vavunikulam Tank bunt, three kilometers south of Tunukkai in the Mullaitivu district and found three heavy guns, including a 120 mm mortar gun. Military also said that at least 25 LTTE cadres were killed and seven LTTE bodies were recovered.

The military gained control yesterday of the Vavunikulam Tank bund, three kilometres south of Tunukkai in the Mullaitivu district and found three heavy guns, including a 120 mm mortar gun.
The Defence ministry said that 57 Division troops operating at the combined Mannar - Vavuniya front advanced from its newly established positions at Pandiyankulam and captured the tank bund plus approximately 10 square kilometres of land.
“Citing intercepted LTTE communications, the military said that at least 25 LTTE cadres had been killed, and scores injured, in the clashes. Seven LTTE bodies had also been recovered by the army,” the ministry said.
The ministry added that troops had recovered one 120 mm heavy mortar gun, two 81 mm mortar guns, hundreds of mortar rounds, five T-56 assault riffles, a tractor, two motor bikes, four intercoms, a pair of binoculars and a few other items of military equipment, during the initial search operation conducted in the area.
“The ground troops have also observed scattered bodies of killed LTTE cadres lying ahead of the established defences,” it added.
