I have no intention to have an argument with you regarding how someone can get a Ph.D. I am from the same century that you represent to comment on this thread. There are so many doctorate studies on various emerging trends or novel trends of existing studies done so far. Even if you have never heard of certain approved methodologies in some areas of studies and also some procedures on doctorate studies in different countries aiming different sectors, does not mean that varied scenarios do not prevail just because you have never heard of them. We are talking about the common man looking for migration opportunities when he or she is fed-up surviving with limited aspects in his or her own country. Not everyone can get admission to Ph.D.'s no matter they have done some significant study phase in their lives. It depends on the IQ level of a person whether they are destined to end up with Ph.D.'s or not. A simple comment like "go and do a Ph.D." does not make a person to end up with that Dr. tag before his or her name. Doing a Ph.D. is a tough academic commitment of someone's life regardless of the century that person may belong to. You may have strong ideas on doing doctoral studies but I was referring to the common man, who struggles with their daily life with an average education such as a Higher National Diploma or general B.Sc. So they should have a clear path if they are after migration not further studies. Not everyone can have scholarships or partial scholarships for further studies and not everyone can afford to pay in full if unable to receive any of the financial assistance. When people find a way to migrate to a country to enjoy a good living condition with some settlement in life, they do not want to get into a Ph.D. unless such academic stage is their ultimate goal in life. A lot of people apply to countries like Australia, NZ, because they know the pathway to permanent residency is not that bloody hard compared to other countries. So, migrating to such countries can't be replaced by a doctoral study in the US. Those are at two extreme ends I was trying to point out that as a whole and not necessarily the path to doctoral studies as it is not practical on each and every person except for someone who has a higher level of academic thirst and engagement. There should be something to try with less effort and pressure rather than starting from extreme ends
