Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's live coverage of the 43rd match of this year's World Cup. This Is Jamie Alter, and you've tuned in to what promises to be a cracker, Australia v Sri Lanka in Grenada.
Some clouds overhead, but otherwise lovely blue skies, the ground bathed in sunshine. A good crowd building up. Great setting for a day of cricket on the green.
Pitch report:
Last time we had a game on this surface, there were overcast conditions. Today its even, with just a couple rough areas, no cracks or flakes. Basically, no worries for the batsmen. Should assist the spinners as the day progresses.
The toss:
Ricky Ponting flipped, Mahela Jayawardene called heads, won, and decided to have a bat. He wants to make first use of the pitch. Surprise, surprise, Sri Lanka have rested Chaminda Vaas and Muttiah Muralitharan. Maybe expected, as both teams have already qualified for the semis? Im pretty surprised. Australia have recalled Nathan Bracken in place of Stuart Clark. There are other two noticeable absences in both sides today. Shane Watson (calf) is out for Australia, while Sri Lanka are missing Lasith Malinga (ankle).
The Scenario:
Both sides are secured in the semi-finals, so that isn't a factor today. In fact, many have tipped these two teams as finalists, but even without that presumption these two are always fun to watch. Australia are on a roll - the World Cup holders have not lost since Pakistan beat them by 10 runs at Headingley in May 1999. To put that in perspective, that 24 wins and a tie since then. Sri Lanka, though, are in some form, and have the best bowling attack in the tournament. They're superb in the field, like Australia, and have the explosive Sanath Jayasuriya up the top, enjoying a great run. Sri Lanka will look to dislodge the opening duo of Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden.
Ricky Ponting hasnt looked like getting out all tournament, and you can never count him out. Glenn McGrath is in the wickets; in fact, he leads the tally in the competition. Shaun Tait has been a real find for Australia, too. Two exciting sides, with super players both.
As we wait for the game to begin, feel free to peruse Andrew Miller's preview.
Vital stat:
Australia have won 41 of the 62 one-day clashes between the sides and four out of five at previous World Cups. They lost, you'll all remember, in the finals of the 1996 edition at Lahore, a win that really put Sri Lanka on the map.
Captain speak
Mahela Jayawardene: "It's an ideal time to play them because we are very relaxed. It is an important game for us, but I don't think it's that important for us to risk Lasith [Malinga] if he is not 100%. We've got guys who can step up to the plate and deliver for us, so I'm not very concerned about his fitness right now."
Ricky Ponting: "Our plan will be to get through the new ball as well as we can and keep wickets in hand for the middle part of the game when they slow things down with their spinners, Murali, Sanath Jayasuriya and Tillakaratne Dilshan."
As we wait for matters to get underway, let me remind you that you can now watch an animated representation of our commentary on Cricinfo 3D. It uses all our scoring data to render a 3d representation of the game, with various camera angles for you to play around with, and it has features such as wagon wheels, pitch maps, and the live scorecard. There are also replays after every wicket and boundary on demand, as well as celebrations for wickets. Yes, yes, it's free. Don't be shy to click away.
Ah, yes, another bit of fun for you all - a host of downloadable stuff for you.
0.1 Bracken to Tharanga, no run, good start, right up there and moving in from outside off stump, looking for some inswing, Tharanga shuffles across and gets behind the ball in defence
0.2 Bracken to Tharanga, no run, there's the movement he wants, full and swinging away off a great length outside off stump, suckering Tharanga into a play and miss
0.3 Bracken to Tharanga, 1 run, fullish again outside off stump, Tharanga gets half-forward, opening the face of the bat and nudging it down to third man for one

Here's Shaun Tait to share the ball with Bracken
1.1 Tait to Tharanga, no run, short of a length outside off stump, bang on target, Tharanga hops up and defends it down in front of point
1.2 Tait to Tharanga, 1 no ball, short of a length outside off stump, he oversteps looking for movement and bounce, Tharanga shuffles across and leaves it be

1.4 Tait to Tharanga, no run, overpitched outside off stump, he gets forward and square-drives, but cant beat Clarke at backward point
1.5 Tait to Tharanga, 1 run, good length outside off stump, he gets to the pitch and pushes gently to Hussey at mid-off and chances his arm, which is off anyways, so thats an easy run

Tito in Florida emails me: "Sri Lanka used the same maneuver against India. They dropped Murali and Vaas for the recent tour of India. Then hit them with the two in the WC and knocked them out. Here they have a chance to lull Oz into complacency against their B attack and then really come at them in the final."
2.1 Bracken to Tharanga, no run, good length on off stump, Tharanga gets over it to counter the swing and turns it uneasily to square leg
2.2 Bracken to Tharanga, no run, good length outside off stump, pitches and moves away as Tharanga gets a good stride in and shoulders arms
2.3 Bracken to Tharanga, 1 run, good length just outside off stump, he comes forward and defends, and gets an inside-edge to short fine leg, Hogg moves well and keeps them down to just the single
2.4 Bracken to Jayasuriya, 1 leg bye, strays down leg stump, Jayasuriya doesnt time his tickle well enough and Gilchrist moves well to cut off runs
2.5 Bracken to Tharanga, no run, back of a length outside off stump, asking him to drive, but he shoulders arms
2.6 Bracken to Tharanga, no run, back of a length, moving into off stump, Tharanga gets behind it and defends, turning the face of the bat as the ball rolls in front of midwicket
End of over 3 (2 runs) - Sri Lanka 16/0 (RR: 5.33)

Dan asks: "What do you think of Bracken's headband? Little bit Roger Federish, I reckon."
3.1 Tait to Jayasuriya, FOUR, banged in short down leg stump, Jayasuriya hooks, doesnt time it well but the top-edges flies over Gilchrist down to fine leg for four
3.2 Tait to Jayasuriya, no run, now its a fuller one outside leg stump, the yorker, which he tries to flick to the on side, misses and Tait asks the question, but it clearly pitched outside leg
3.3 Tait to Jayasuriya, 1 wide, strives for the yorker again but ends up bowling it way outside leg stump
3.3 Tait to Jayasuriya, 2 runs, good length this time on off stump, Jayasuriya gets well forward and pushes softly past mid-off for an easy brace
3.4 Tait to Jayasuriya, 1 run, good length on middle and off, seaming away, but he gets behind the line and pushes down to mid-on for one
3.5 Tait to Tharanga, no run, short of a length on middle and leg, he gets behind the ball and taps it down into the ground outside leg
3.6 Tait to Tharanga, 1 run, full outside off stump, he pokes at it tamely and gets an inside-edge to square leg
End of over 4 (9 runs) - Sri Lanka 25/0 (RR: 6.25)

4.3 Bracken to Jayasuriya, OUT, gone! Good length outside off stump, moving in, Jayasuriya stands rooted and gets caught on the front leg pretty much in front of about leg stump, and after a couple seconds umpire Doctrove raises the finger! The dangerous Jayasuriya goes to Bracken!

5.1 McGrath to Tharanga, no run, outside off stump on a good length, he gets forward and raises the bat to let is pass
5.2 McGrath to Tharanga, 1 run, short of a length, he stands and flashes the extravagant flash, theres a thick edge but no gulley, and gets one to third man
5.3 McGrath to Sangakkara, OUT, gone! Tough call - pitches on a good length just outside off stump, moves in, Sangakkara stands behind the line and defends, misses, the ball shaves in hits him on the knee roll, everyone appeals and after a while Aleem Dar raises the finger! I have doubts over the height of that ball, looked like it may have gone over the stumps, but for now Sangakkara has to go!

Rifqi says: "I'm surprised they didn't give Marvan Atapattu are chance today. With a semi-final berth assured. This would have been ideal time to give him a chance to gain some form against a formidable opponent. Wonder what would happen if he's asked to bat in the finals with no match practice."
