Oct 17, 2008 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's health ministry has banned the import and sale of 60 food products as a precautionary measure following the melamine Chinese milk contamination scandal.
The products include milk powder and those using milk as an ingredient such as chocolate and biscuits. The information department said in a statement the Ministry of Healthcare and Nutrition had taken the decision on the basis of counter measures taken by several other countries to remove contaminated food stocks.
"Supermarkets and all other sales outlets have been advised not to sell banned items," said the statement on the information department's website.
Authorities are currently investigating the possibility of contaminated Chinese milk powder being used in other products in Sri Lanka such as biscuits and chocolates, it said.
Earlier this week a Sri Lankan chocolate maker Edna was ordered by courts to halt chocolate sales, pending an inquiry by the island's consumer protection office into the use of Chinese milk.
The move came after Switzerland's Health Ministry halted sales of three food products, including a Sri Lankan biscuit, which contained traces of melamine, which however it said posed no grave risk to public health.
The Sri Lanka biscuit maker, Ceylon Business Limited, has said it is temporarily withdrawing Muchee Lemon Puff biscuits, to reassure customers, though the company does not use any Chinese milk ingredients.
Many countries have pulled melamine-contaminated sweets and drinks from supermarket shelves amid the widening scandal over Chinese milk products tainted with the toxic chemical. Melamine, which is usually used for making plastics, has been detected in snacks made in China by food multinationals.
Since first appearing in baby milk formula, melamine has been found in a range of products containing Chinese milk.

uocanu said:We are still waiting for the WHO or some other health organization to release a comprehensive list of all recalled products tainted with melamine, but until then here is an updated list compiled from various sources on the internet. Products will be added and removed here as updates occur.
Please keep in mind that mass confusion persists around this issue; many companies are protesting the findings of government testing, while others are finding melamine in products that were previously approved by some governments. Even products that don't use dairy have been recalled - the melamine scandal includes other related ingredients such as whole milk powder, non-fat milk powder, whey powder, lactose powder, and casein.
While many of the brands listed below are available worldwide, so far it appears that only Asian products are affected - therefore if you live in Europe or North America, your Snickers bar is probably safe to eat. For now.
North American products are italicized; the rest are products that have been recalled in Asia only.

uocanu said:Consumers are being encouraged to continue drinking milk, despite a new book linking mainstream milk products to serious health risks.
In his book, Devil in the Milk, Lincoln University Professor Keith Woodford links serious illness, such as type one diabetes and heart disease, to A1 type milk.
Professor Woodford's book, which hits bookshops today, also claims there is a body of evidence that links one of the proteins in A1 milk to serious illnesses.
A2-type milk does not contain the same beta-casein protein fragment implicated in such diseases, the book says.
New Zealand Food Safety Authority food standards director Carole Inkster said milk was nutritious, whether it was A1 or A2, and there were no food safety issues with either type of milk.
"Recent media reports of issues with milk, based on a book release, are not backed by scientific evidence," she said.
Former Dairy Farmers New Zealand Southland chairman Russell Falconer also expressed concerns about the book's potential impact.
"It would really concern me if people stopped drinking milk because of this, because of the other benefits of drinking milk, which have been well proven over hundreds of years."
Mr Falconer was skeptical about the book's findings and suggested farmers and consumers should wait until further independent tests had been carried out before making a decision regarding A1 milk.
Professor Woodford said while he drank very little A1 milk, it was up to individuals to assess the risk to them.
"We each have to make that decision and it depends what risk category we see ourselves as being in ... anybody who's got stomach ulcers, Crohn's disease, anybody who's got any of the gastrointestinal diseases – if I had any of those diseases there's no way I would be drinking A1 milk."
The industry had been aware of the A1 issue for some time, he said.
"Several years ago I was talking to a key industry leader about this and he said to me 'I think you're probably right, Keith, but we mustn't do anything that would hurt the industry'."
A2 Corporation owns intellectual property to identify cows producing A2 milk, and produces and sells A2 milk in New Zealand, Australia and the United States.
Chief executive Anthony Lawler was pleased by Professor Woodford's findings, but said all milk was healthy and nutritious.
"We're very excited by the book ... it's very heartening to see an independent third party give such a comprehensive review of A2 as a product offering".
A2 milk was a product that would appeal to people with an interest in diseases believed to be caused by A1, he said.
A Fonterra spokesperson said the company had yet to study Professor Woodford's book and could not comment until the findings had been analysed.
As i know Anchor contain mostly A1.
But this thing ddnt caouse major efects. but now ppl are searching for A2 milk as this book said its good for helth. This consept is stil in reserch level
