When Minister of economic affairs and development, Basil Rajapakse visited Batticaloa Town on the 20th, the Ven. chief incumbent Maha nikaye Sumanaratne Thero who went to meet the Minster on the 26th was viciously scolded, disgraced and chased away by the Minister. In protest against this behavior of the Minister, Ven. Batticaloa Mangalarama chief incumbent Amarapura Sri Kalyanawansa maha nikaya and Deputy Sanganayake, Ven. Ampitiya Sumanaratne has staged a fast unto death in his temple premises.

The Ven. Sanganayake who was viciously scolded and treated most insolently by the Minister before a large crowd, police officers, media, and Ministers, has given in writing under his signature that he will not abandon his fast until Basil tenders an apology. He had also forwarded letters in this regard to the President, Opposition leader and the devotees who attend the temple.
