I'll recommend you to use Shareaza for p2p, It can connect to EDonkey, Gnutella, Gnutella2 and BitTorrent

There is no problem of malware with it since it's open source.

But for bittorrent I'll recommend you use utorrent instead of shareaza.

Yes you can get better speeds with torrents than other p2p.
