Now that our most important Aussie tour is just around the corner, I thought of updating those of us who find cricket field setting names like mid on, mid wicket, backward point, third man, etc., confusing.
In the pic you will see all those 25 some field settings available for a right handed batsman. But given that there are only 9 players to field, except the bowler and the WK, a challenge always lies when setting a field, especially if the batsman is explosive like Tendulkar. So depending on the situation and the batsman the field can be set either as attacking or defensive.
An attacking field is where, you put most of your fielders around the batsman like in places like short leg, silly point, gully and all three slips. An attacking field is ideal for the tail enders as they are not good at playing big shots. But if the batsman is explosive then the field setting will be more in between an attacking and defensive one where you put more fielders in the boundary line.
And a good captain would also make sure that he study the past match videos for short comings of the opponents, so for e.g. we will always see a Point for Tendulkar because he is famous for getting caught at Point trying to cut short deliveries with extra bounce, due to his short height
