Channaka de Silva reporting from Beijing
The artificially constructed pseudo image and the myth about a hyped-up possibilities of an Olympic medal for boxer Anuruddha Ratnayake crashed down to earth at the Olympics here when the Sri Lankan cut a sorry figure against a lowly ranked opponent from Brazil and lost by a massive margin.
The loss comes as a knock out punch for the country's boxing officials who bloated the mediocre talent of Ratnayake to the bursting level in the run-up to the Olympics. It would also provide a telling embarrassment to the corporate entities who spent millions of Rupees in erecting giant billboards and making fancy TV commercials to hype up Ratnayake's chances at the world's highest level.
Ratnayake's lanky opponent from Brazil Robenilson Vieira easily outpointed him using his advantage of reach to the maximum, as the Sri Lankan was found lacking in his technique to tackle a taller opponent.
Ratnayake later apologized and said he didn't know what happened. "I had great hopes for the Olympics. But I don't know why I failed to deliver when it mattered. I know I had the blessings of the whole of Sri Lanka.
I am sorry for disappointing them and failing to fulfil the expectations" said Ratnayake.
Vieira won the bout 13-3 on points, exposing bluff that made many Sri Lankans actually believe there was a chance for Ratnayake to win a medal. The Brazilian easily outsmarted Ratnayake and led 2-0, 6-1 and 9-2 at the end of the first three rounds.
Ratnayake was only the latest addition to Sri Lanka's embarrassing show at the Games as all five members of the team who have taken field so far lost without a fight in the first round of their respective competitions.
Only the two athletes Susanthika Jayasinghe, Nadeeka Lakmali and swimmer Daniel Lee who are yet to take part remain only Sri Lankans standing at the Games.
