It is reported that Rs.6.1 million of the money allocated for printing examination papers for the second term in schools in the North Central Province has been defrauded and this money has been used to print election posters of the former chief minister of the North Central PC.

The PC had allocated Rs.9.4 million for the printing of question papers. A package of 6 question papers was to be given to students at the 2nd term test. The cost of a question paper is Rs.5.00 for printing on good paper and Rs.3.00 for substandard paper. As such, a package of question papers cost Rs.30.00. There are 110,000 students in Grades 6 to 11 in the North Central Province. Hence, the cost of question paper packages for all these students is Rs.3.3 million.

As such Rs.6.1 million has been pilfered. Also, in certain schools students have been charged Rs.50.00 for question papers. This money too would have been pocketed. Certain schools had not received question papers. For example for 252 students in Grade 11 at Nochchiyagama Model School only one question paper for Sinhala subject had been made available. Students had been charged for making photo copies of it. Hence, it is clear that more money has been pilfered by not printing the required number of question papers. Large stocks of papers have been bought with the money that had been pilfered and has been stocked at provincial council printing press at Saliyapura. Posters for former CM Berty Premalal Dissanayake's election campaign are being printed with this paper.

Mr. Wasanthe Samarasinghe, chief ministerial candidate of the JVP speaking to 'Lankatrauth' said a campaign demanding not to collect money from students for examinations and urging the government to take legal action against those who defrauded the money allocated for question papers would be launched. Already paying the printing press for the balance money for printing question papers has been stopped as a result of the campaign said Mr. Samarasinghe.
