VDrift. Cross platform driving game with a neat physics engine and really playable AI and decent graphics. You’ll need a steering wheel to get the best out of it of course.
0AD is a Real Time Strategy (RTS) game with professional style graphics, and the kind of detail you would expect to find in a commercial product. Think Microsoft’s Age of Empires series and you’re close. Still in pre-release, but available if you’re happy downloading source code.
Hedgewars is a lovely looking little turn based game which feels a little like the classic Worms title of yesteryear. Splatting hedgehogs may seem unnecessarily cruel, but it can be cartoony fun too it seems.
FlightGear delivers a beautiful flight simulator to your computer, chock full of scenery, aircraft, locations, and lots of open formats for you to enjoy and edit. Glorious.
Sam & Max. Do old computer games age? Only you, a psychotic rabbit and some great looking comic caper adventures will be able to tell. Not open source, but still free. As in bird. Here birdy birdy.
Spring:1944 takes you back to the days when tanks were tanks and horses were for the milk round. A WW2 RTS game with great graphics, the usual challenges and a focus on managing resources across a large playground.
3D Ultimate Pinball is not a *real* free game, but it does have a free demo which gives you unlimited play on a proper pinball machine. The full version simply gives you 4 extra tables, is all. We like pinball. A lot. And this is fun.

OpenTTD is an open source remake of the classic Transport Tycoon game, and it does a grand job. OK, so if you’re not an RTS fan you’re going to sigh a little, but it’s definitely fun if you’ve got time and imagination to spare.
Powermanga. Sometimes you just want to shoot pretty coloured stuff up, in which case this 2D arcade game is for you. You get 41 levels and full joystick support. Whee!

Planeshift is a beautifully drawn online role playing adventure game (yes a mmorpg), which promises to remain totally free with none of that premium commercial stuff. Which makes it sort of unique. If spells are your thing…
Ultimate Stunts is apparently not just another racing game. For one thing, you can design your own tracks. With loops and jumps and all sorts of excitement. Fully open source, with cross-platform support for Linux and Windows.

Boppin may be garish purple but that’s the least of your problems as you struggle to complete the puzzles, release monsters and defeat your Hunnybunz enemies. Huh?
Dark Oberon is a free RTS game but with a difference. The graphics are created out of real plasticine models. Cute. Ultra slow development on the part of the sole developer, but still worth a look.
Pingus. Whoa, it’s Lemmings. With penguins. 22 tested levels and around another 100 + untested. Plus some new moves (like Jumper). If you haven’t played Lemmings, you’re in for a treat. But boy it’s hard.
Table Tennis Pro offers a very credible alternative to commercial ping pong games, with cool graphics, a nice control system and some tricky gameplay. As long as you’re prepared to learn. Nice.

FreeOrion. Space, the final frontier…ah sorry, wrong game. Anyway this is a turn based space empire game where you get to conquer the universe and beyond. This space stuff looks pretty complex from over here.
Warzone 2100 gives you the chance to rebuild the earth after a devastating nuclear holocaust. Good job it’s open source then. And with some nice graphics and a vibrant dev community, this RTS game looks good enough to trounce.

Freedroid. Kind of similar to above, but with robots. And penguins. Robot penguins. Slash, hack, spells. And penguins, darn it, penguins. What more could you possibly need?
Secret Maryo Chronicles is a cute 2D platform game which is vaguely familiar. Small chap, runs around grabbing power-ups, leaping over enemies and beating levels. Wonder where they got the idea from?

UltraStar is an open source Karaoke game. Wait, come back. You sing into the mic, the game tells you how good or bad you were, you try to improve. There’s a community too. Be still my beating heart.
GNU Backgammon is not just a game, it’s also a teaching engine which’ll hone your BG skillz beyond your wildest dreams. Based on a neural network and smarter than you.

Command & Conquer Classic. THE RTS game of the age. Fast, furious and completely addictive. Now transferred from the commercial to freeware world as a marketing tactic.

Slapshot Air Hockey. Elder statesman 3D version of the classic arcade game, with multiple tables and split screen support. It’s OK, eh?

Myst Online just goes to show you can’t keep a great game down. Stunning artwork, maddening puzzles and now avatars. Online gaming just got a visit from posh Uncle Edward.
Warsow is billed as a fast paced first person shooter (FPS), and is set in a delightfully realised cartoon future. It is of course all about the jumping, shooting and gloating, so don’t expect surprises will ya?

Extreme Tux Racer gives you the joy and thrills of downhill racing…with PENGUINS! No really, you’ve got to be excited about that right? Swooshing down steep hills, catching fish, avoiding rocks, just being a penguin. Coooool!

Unknown Horizons is a nice looking little 2D real time strategy (RTS) game with settlements, colonists, trade and diplomacy. Sounds idyllic really. It’s under constant development, which is a very good sign indeed.

Super Mario War is a multiplayer platformer featuring everybody’s favourite Italian plumber. I actually know a short, tubby Italian plumber. Nah, just kidding. There are 1000 maps and you can create your own. Go crazy!

Crayon Physics is a delightful drawing puzzle game, which sounds simple, but gets very difficult very fast. It comes with gorgeous graphics and an absolutely engrossing series of levels. Wonderful game all round.

Left4Dead is a retro re-creation of the Nintendo classic done in 80s style, complete with tiny pixels and beep audio. It’s got a multiplayer mode and features 4 campaigns, 2 difficulty levels and loads of 8–bit loveliness. Totally whacky but fun.

Duck Doom Deluxe. Look there’s absolutely nothing funny about shooting cartoon ducks with a Doom type interface. Nothing at all. In fact you could say it’s rather childish and unnecessary. So why’s it so totally addictive?

Trackmania Nations. Race classic, with customisable cars, national flags and a healthy dose of high resolution speed. As with all motor racing games, your controller choice will determine fun levels, so make it right.

Freeciv is the classic empire building strategy game which has an expert development community. Lead your little folk from barbarity to civilisation and try not to mess up because they’re, like, totally relying on you. Expect to spend a lot of time on this title.

Wolfenstein:Enemy Territory is not for tiny tots, no sir. It’s for a squad of hard edged grunts who’ll get the job done no matter what the cost. The classic first person shooter makes its way to freeware online multiplayer mode without passing go. Or collecting any money of course.

Anagramarama is a free word game for Linux and Windows. You get to find as many words as you can within the time limit, which makes it a rather fun game for nerds and wordsmiths. Not so good for impatient types though.

BattleTanks. Multiplayer cartoon tank battle game with 13 maps, co-op and traditional capture the flag modes and as much arcady cross platform (Mac too) fun as they could cram into the pixels. Under very active development.

Excalibur:Morgana’s Revenge is a first person action adventure game, with dinosaurs, hoverbike and a very strange Flintstones car. Oh and did we mention time travel? There’s 42 levels in single player mode, some crazy quilt artwork and music and interesting power-ups.

Alien Arena is the classic FPS game which set the seal on the fast paced multiplayer genre. If you like your games dark, broody and very purple Sci-Fi, then this is the place for you. As long as you’re happy with other people trying to do harm to your person.

Rocks n Diamonds is a cute little arcade puzzler which features literally thousands of add-on levels, network and local multiplayer modes and support for Windows, Linux and Mac. Simple but engrossing as the advertising says. Or doesn’t.

Invade Earth is a Risk clone, which comes with a map editor, multiplayer and single player support and the usual turn by turn gameplay involving world domination, subterfuge, war and victory. There’s also a choice of different computer playing styles just to mix things up.

Bos Wars. Oh look, another RTS game with real time resource, economy and military challenges. The game is lovingly tended by a dynamic development team, which makes it a cut above the usual strategy titles out there.

Cube2:Sauerbraten is a beautifully realised FPS, with all the conventional rush and bash gameplay you’d expect from such. Well documented and with an active and helpful development crew this is truly olde oldskool in oh so many ways.

CrackAttack. Cross platform Tetris clone with multiplayer mayhem baked into the gameplay. Lots of other fun features too, which means you could end up looking at Tetris in a whole different way after this. Or not.

Dink Smallwood is an isometric adventure game which comes with an innovative adventure editor so you can create your own fun. Everything’s done in a jocular mode, which helps to offset the somewhat dated graphics.

The World of Padman combines the crazy of PacMan with the real world backdrop feel of the fab Army Men games. It’s an FPS sure, but with an original colourful atmosphere that’s pretty unique. Interesting.

Allegiance. Microsoft gifted this online multiplayer space shooter to the world as a free product back in ‘99, and it’s still going strong. The game combines MMORPG elements with first person action. Microsoft eh?

Performous. Karaoke meets Dance Dance Revolution meets Guitar Hero. We’re talking the ultimate Ninja music game here peeps. If you can play this, you can play anything.

Slam Soccer is cute, it’s funny, it’s atmospheric, it’s hall of fame weird. 80 teams, 20 stadii, weather, multilingual commentators, 2 player mode and career play. This ain’t your grandad’s FIFA 2020.

Danger from the Deep is a stonkingly atmospheric WW2 submarine game, which puts you in charge of a denizen of the deep on a variety of missions and ocean warfare scenarios. It’s early code, but jolly impressive all the same.
Neverball. Billed as a puzzle action game, you get to move a glistening ball around an increasingly tricky track. There are over 140 crazy shiny graphic levels and if those aren’t enough you can always pop off and create your own.

Enigma is a puzzle, wrapped up in a maze, hidden in a cross platform package of graphical glory. Tricky as all heck, and truth to be told a bit of a fussy loader on Windows. But fun.
LBreakout2. We love the breakout games, and this version is super spiffy wonderful. C’mon, 50 levels, more bonuses than you can shake a stick at and a level editor. What’s not to love? Nice.

Eternal Lands is yet another free MMORPG, with the full complement of creatures, skills, items and challenges which makes the genre so endearing. There are even some poems. Aww…sweet.

FooBillard is an open source billiards game featuring gorgeous graphics, Linux and Windows support and a somewhat moribund dev process. Still a nice game to get your teeth into though.

TORCS may not have as rich a graphics heritage as some motor racing games, but it does have 50 different cars, 20 tracks and 20 AI opponents to race against. Single and multiplayer and hugely customisable gameplay. Try it!

UFO:Alien Invasion is a beautiful looking X-Com type game which offers rich turn based gameplay alongside a solid story line and great tactical elements. It’s an excellent all-rounder with a vibrant dev team at the helm.

DreamChess is a ‘moderately strong’ chess engine game featuring multiple boards and sets as well as music, sound effects, move lists and undo, just in case you fancy a bit of DIY cheat mode (or mistake and learn mode as they say).
Wing Commander: Privateer. Oh WC how we miss thee, with your little furries hate-on and the whooshing space battles. Now it’s back in a loving remake, with 3D space war, lovingly crafted graphics and a tasty line in small talk.
Frets on Fire is the original Guitar Heroes clone, back when GH had a bright future and everyone wanted to rock out like Wilco Johnson. It’s still pretty cool, although you’ll need to rig up a thrash controller to make it really work properly.
Glest. Tech vs magic gets a 3D real time strategy makeover, and thereby mirrors the tortured real life struggle between nerds and their parents. My robot can beat your suburban hovel and Explorer 4×4. Maybe.

SuperTuxCart features penguins driving go-karts. Actually that’s not fair, there’s lots of different characters, 20 different tracks, single screen multiplayer, fun hazards and a vibrant dev team. Nice arcadey funster.

Scrabble 3D. You have an urge to hurt your brain, like really make it suffer right? Wrestle with words, points, strategies and tactics? Well this should do it for you. The graphics may be a little olde schoole, but hey it’s Scrabble!
Frozen Bubble is a cute little puzzle shooter, hit the bubbles and win. Linux only version here, but for Windows fanatics, there’s the Java browser based version with all the fun of the fair and 100 levels to boot.

VegaStrike is a 3D action space sim that lets you trade, fight and explore a vast universe. At least that’s what it says on the blurb. All you’ve got to remember is you can shoot things up. There, feel better? Nice graphics.

I Have No Tomatoes gets our vote for the best name for a video game this decade. It’s also the ultimate vegetable war game in existence, just squash those toms, dude. The beautiful graphics also help with the enjoyment factor.

Scorched Earth 3D is a turn based artillery game, which features full multiplayer, user map editing and a bunch of strategic options to make it more fun to play. Graphics are gorgeous, gameplay is somewhat point and boom.

FreeCol lets you replay the colonisation of America, only without the scurvy ridden sea journey. Fundamentally similar to the veteran Colonisation game, with some nicely detailed isometric visuals and Java underpinnings. Strictly for the turn based strategists.

Bygfoot is a soccer management game. No sumptuous visuals in this game, just a pure naked lust for glory. Train your players, trade them, keep your stadium in profit and looking good. And above all, win win win. It’s all here.

JQuizShow brings Who Wants to Be a Millionaire to your computer screen in full open source glory. There’s a bunch of user generated and customisable question databases, sound effects, even features like ‘ask a friend’. Network support included. Fun!

Spice Trade features some of the most beautiful graphics you’ll ever see in a computer game. Play the part of Abu the enterprising lad who seeks fame and fortune from buying and selling his way to the top. Different and charming.
