Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has told NDTV India that LTTE leader Vellupillai Prabakaran is not a terrorist and that he will have “deep regrets” if the Tiger chief is killed during the military operations in Sri Lanka.
“Prabhakaran is my friend and I’m not a terrorist,” NDTV quoted the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister of telling the channel in an exclusive interview.
NDTV quoted Karunanidhi as saying that the LTTE has legitimate goals but use the wrong methods in order to achieve them. He said “some in the LTTE maybe involved in terror.”
However just last February Karunanidhi was critical of the Tiger chief was qouted in the Indian media as saying he was "sick" of the Tigers’ war and that the sympathy towards that movement was dwindling gradually and at one point, it completely vanished.

NEW DELHI: Congress on Sunday rejected Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi's comments that Velupillai Prabhakaran was "not a terrorist",
saying the party viewed him as a terrorist and the LTTE an extremist outfit.

Congress spokesperson Kapil Sibal termed the DMK chief's remarks as his "personal opinion" and said the party will ask for Prabhakaran's extradition if Sri Lanka captures him alive.

"That may be his personal opinion. But we do believed that LTTE is a terrorist organisation and all those involved in LTTE's activities are terrorists. This is our belief," Congress spokesperson Kapil Sibal said.

He said "we would expect the Sri Lankan government to hand over him to us in the event of he getting captured."

The Tamil Nadu chief minister said he did not "see" Prabhakaran as a terrorist and that he will be saddened if he is killed in the ongoing offensive in Sri Lanka.

Hitting out at the Congress, BJP used the opportunity to attack the party, saying it cannot "whisk away" on this issue this time as it had withdrawn support to the United Front Government in 1997 after the Jain Commission indicted Karunanidhi in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

"We have already said that the LTTE being a terrorist organization our concern should be only for the innocent Tamil civilians who are trapped in the war zone in Sri Lanka's north," BJP leader Prakash Javdekar said.

He said it was only Karunanidhi's "personal views and there is no logic" in his comments.
