the thing is, if it was a peaceful protest and police have attacked them that is violation of democracy.

But to do a proper protest always people who do the protest has to get permission from police since they do their protest on public roads, where according to the law you cannot block. So if they did not got those clearance from police and done the protest, even if it is not ethical to attack them, police have legal authority to remove them from the road.
