The Air Boss tells  the Officer of the Deck what wind speed he wants and the ship travels  at whatever speed is needed to get that wind over the deck. The highest  desired speed is normally at the beginning of the cycle, when the  heaviest planes are taking off. In my era that was normally fully-loaded  A-6 Intruders needing 27 knots of wind, 10 degrees to port. Once they  were gone the Boss would tell us to slow, typically to ~25 knots wind  over deck.</blockquote>
