Buddhists worldwide, seem to be facing a Christian conspiracy from The United Kingdom! It is extremely doubtful that other Catholic/ Christian countries are not in tow with this latest ploy to dampen the most holy holiday for Buddhists- sinister as their plans often prove to be. Wesak has been declared by The United Nations as an International Buddhist Holiday. The Wesak this year, also happens to be the Buddha Jayanthi Celebrations where Buddhists the world over celebrate the 2550th year of the 3 Holy Events associated with life of The Buddha. Are we to believe that UN declarations have no value whatsoever, or that western powers are so insensitive to any religious festival other than Christian ones? Would these countries decide to hold worldwide examinations like the London A’Levels on Christmas Day or Easter Holidays? Or for that matter on Prophet Mohamed’s Birthday? The GOSL , The Ministry of Education and The BOI must surely pay attention to blatant plans to insult and inconvenience Buddhists in this country by conducting London A’Level Examinations at a time when the whole country is preparing to celebrate The Buddha Jayanthi this year. There is no doubt that this is by no means a coincidence and Buddhists the world over should also take note of this since countries like Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, Singapore, China, Taiwan, South Korea, Laos and India are all planning to celebrate The Buddha Jayanthi this year. All these countries will surely have students who are preparing for their London A’Level Examinations this year & those Buddhist students will be deprived of spending the day in religious observances as is the normal practise. It is definitely not too late for the relevant authorities in The United Kingdom to postpone the papers set to be conducted as a gesture of decency towards all Buddhists in this world, even if they have made an oversight. We do hope that decency will prevail in these western humanitarian & democratic countries that profess to uphold “ everything that is decent” for developing Asian countries like ours to follow as an example! Supposedly, those countries are more civilized than the “ barbarian” Asian countries!
