He may have been a Bodhisathwa. We really don’t know whether it is Maitree Bodhisathwa or another. Anyway, the name itself is not enough to consider as proof. Even now there are people who are using that name in Sri Lanka.  But if he was a Bodhisahwa he will never say destroy the non believers. It can also be a fault of someone who misunderstood the teachings. A Bodhisathwa is a name we use for someone practicing perfections or finished practicing and waiting for the correct time  to become a Buddha. There have been Buddhas in the past. In the future after a long time only Maitree Bodhisathwa is expected to come into this world for the enlightenement. Then only we can say Maitree Buddha. Duration of the ministry too can change and the number of followers too can change  depending on the life span of the humans during the time of a certain Buddha.  We still have the ministry of Gauthama Buddha. After a long time from that ministry only the next Buddha(Maitree) will establish his ministry.  See, during the time of Gauthama Buddha life span is around 80But during the time of Maitree Buddha life span is expected to be eighty thousand. So, you really can expect more followers With regard to Lord Buddhas,Whatever the name they have all Buddhas focus on four noble truths. The best thing is to focus on those four noble truths and make an effort to understand it. They  never did consider their name or the number of followers important . They wanted to help the ones who are undergoing suffering. They never did ask people to leave their religious leaders and call themselves Buddhists.  They only want people to follow the path to overcome suffering. There were occasions where our Buddha had asked followers to continue respecting their previous religious leaders while following the path. Because the blessed one was not interested in harming non believers. The blessed one didn’t ask Bhikkus to argue with non believers saying my religion is better than yours. But instead the blessed one asked the venerable sanga to preach the four noble truths to help the ones who are suffering to come out of their suffering. It is a pity that some people keep debating over books , names and words when they can do something to come out of their suffering. There have been so many Buddhas in the past. We have missed those ministries. In the past some of us may have postponed following the path to listen and hear dhamma from Gauthama Buddha. But now, the very people may postpone that for the next ministry. During that ministry also some of them will postpone because they have the habit of postponing. During that ministry also it is not possible to say that all of us visiting this thread will get human births. Even if they do, one cannot be sure to get a birth in a place where one can hear dhamma without any disability.  </blockquote>
