If this story is NOT specifically mentioned in the thripitaka, it could may even be a 'jana pravadaya..'  I believe the main thing is to refer/understand what is noted in the 'thripitaka' because no other source would have the same amount of credibility. Similar to the notion that every Bhuddha is born in 'Dambadiva'. One can imagine that very specific criteria must be met for such a special birth and buddhathwaya to take place (cosmic energy formation, type of society and culture, political stability etc... ).  But the exact location of 'Dambadiva' can be relative to the composition of the earth or the specific planet/world at that time. Imagine explaining all this to people 2600 years ago. It may have been simpler and straight forward to say that every Bhuddha is born in 'Dambadiva'.</blockquote>
