One of my relations (who is 64 but quite fit) took an ECG recently and found out there is a little abnormality through the family doctor. The doc recommended her to a cardiologist and after some examinations (exercise ECG, some blood tests, etc..) he recommended her to take a angiogram test. Most of you might have already heard of that test.

It's about injecting a special ink to a blood vessel in hand which directly goes to the heart. Then they use an imaging technique to see the blocks in arteries (supply vessels to heart mussels). She was found to have a 90% block in one of the important artery and recommended for an immediate angioplast operation.

That's about putting a little spin like metal to the place of the block through a vessel in leg. They insert the spin with cable which has a camera connected to the tip.

The operation was successful but the doctor has stated the block was not due to cholesterol but due to calcium deposits. I have never heard of such blocks ever so I searched the net and revealed it was a recent finding. See this BBC article about it. Calcium pills 'increase' risk of heart attack

According to the article there is a severe risk of heart attack to older people who take extra calcium. However you might see advertisement on special milk that recommends people to get extra calcium diet daily. I can't guess that they do not know this recent finding. What I can guess is, they don't care about older people. They want to sell their product.

This is the reason I needed to share this information with you. If you know someone who takes extra calcium daily, please inform this and ask to talk to their doctors about this new finding. If they don't know about this, then ask them to go and learn these new finding without killing innocent people.

My relation was recommended with calcium tablets continuously for last few years due to a back pain by a specialist (I don't want to personally insult him which is not my idea). When we met him and asked him whether he is aware of this situation, he said he doesn't know. I think these doctors must be given with an exam more regularly to check whether they keep their knowledge updated with recent finding. Otherwise they give the medicines like parrots and kill innocent people. (Not all doctors belong this category. I know most of the docs are now referring internet more often to check new medicines, etc...).

Okay...You can verify this with your family doctors and if they don't know, ask them to search the net on that. This will save 1000s of lives.

Ask patients to search the net on their illness (wikipedia articles are very good) and NEVER EVER depend on doctor's word. Especially the ones who are more business minded (you know how to detect that).

I know an incident where a well known specialist who gave a drug for two weeks for a leg pain, which wikipedia states to have severe risk of heart attack if taken more than a week.

Another incident is about an eye specialist who has given an eye drop to reduce eye pressure without asking whether the patient is already taking blood pressure reducing tablets. The eye drops we put to reduce eye pressure directly effects to lowe rthe blood pressure as well. The patient was almost dead due to this incorrect behaviours.

In Sri Lanka, some specialists are more business minded (I don't say everybody). As soon as they finish work at a government hospital, they run to private practice and pass patients in lighting speed without even asking the problem clearly. People who are doctors must know it is a noble duty (a duty that directly connects with heavens) and keep the respect to it. If they want to earn money through it, it is better they chose a career in software.

I know there are very nice doctor who are serving rural areas without even adequate facilities. I'm sure you'll agree with me, they are the real doctors.

Ask patients always suscpect the word of doctors and cross check with internet. Ask everybody to search on each and every tablet/syrup on the internet to see whether there are any severe side effects. NEVER EVER depend on their words. This will help to save lots of lives.

Lots of things to say. But I'll stop now. Spread the message as much as possible.
