The main opposition United National Party (UNP) has called upon the Elections Commissioner to nullify at least six polling booths in the Nawalapitiya Division after armed gangs are alleged to have stuffed the boxes after holding the staff at gun point.
New Democratic Front (NDF) spokesperson Themiya Hurulle said the incidents took place shortly before voting commenced.
He added that the previous night armed gangs had visited selected homes in the same area and demanded for the National Identity Cards (NICs) after threatening the occupants. “These issues have also been brought before Election Commissioner’s Office”, he added.
