LONDON, March 9 (UPI) -- Developers of a specialized camera that can help police detect weapons and drugs under clothing say they will show it off in England this week.
The camera, which can see through clothing at distances of up to 80 feet, could be used by authorities in such places as railway stations and airports, The Sunday Times of London reported.
The newspaper reported that while the T5000 system can detect objects under clothing, it does not show anatomical details. It works by detecting and measuring terahertz waves, or T-waves for short.
Because each object emits different wavelengths, the camera can distinguish, for example, between sugar and cocaine, the newspaper reported.
The technology, originally designed for use in spacecraft to see through clouds of cosmic dust, was developed by ThruVision, an English company.
"Acts of terrorism have shaken the world in recent years and security precautions have been tightened globally. The T5000 dramatically extends the range over which we can scan people," said ThruVision Chief Executive Clive Beattie.
The camera will be showcased at the Home Office scientific development branch's annual exhibition at an airbase in Buckinghamshire, the newspaper said.

ThruVision’s passive imaging technology stems from a collaborative European Space Agency (ESA) project which was based on original research carried out over many years by UK astronomers, including those at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory to study dying stars.
The T5000 operates in the terahertz region of the electromagnetic spectrum – frequently this region of the spectrum is referred to with terms such as Terahertz rays, or T-rays. The T5000 is compact, rugged, portable, easy-to-use and completely safe.
T-rays are a form of low level energy naturally emitted from all materials, including rocks, plants, animals, and people. They can pass through smoke, clouds and many solid materials like clothing, and in some cases, even walls.
The T5000 passively collects these naturally occurring T-rays and processes them to form images that reveal concealed objects hidden under a person’s clothing without displaying physical body detail and without subjecting them to any of the harmful radiation associated with traditional X-ray security screening.
ThruVision Ltd. will show the T5000 at the Home Office Scientific Development Branch (HOSDB) Exhibition on March 12th & 13th 2008.

Well apparently a US Company has introduced a camera lens that through InfraRed can see through clothes. Yeah this is probably the next big privacy lawsuit to hit the news. Obviously people won't be happy with a camera lens marketed to common day people that has the ability to see through there clothing. Sure it's some cool technology that I and many others wouldn't mind having, it's just that those few bad people ruin it for the rest. Ti'll probably end up in security checkpoints.
The lense that could well result in it being banned because of its perve potential is called the "Infrared See-Through Filter PF". The PF is a special optical device that helps to visually penetrate an object's surface in order to view whatever lies below. The PF makes it possible for you to see images that are normally invisible to the human eye.
With the dawn of an age where a camera is on every cellphone there have been enough issues with privacy and identity theft. This will greatly add to that.
