(Lanka-e-News, Jan. 25, 2010, 8.40PM) Former President Chandrika Kumaratunge urged all supporters and member of the SLFP party to use the vote against corruption, family rule and bad governance; and vote for democracy in keeping with the Bandaranaike policies, with a view to building the country.
Mrs. Kumaratunge made this request when she addressed the media after she met the Presidential candidate Gen. Fonseka who arrived at Horagolla to pay homage at the Banadaranaike mausoleum.
She said she is making this special request as the only surviving past leader of the country.
She further stated that she remained silent for some years because the Democracy they protected with great diligence was being totally destroyed and the fundamental freedoms were at stake.
She said, let there be good result in favor of those who are for Democracy, Democratic Institutions and fundamental freedoms through a fair and free election. Breakdown of law and discipline will make this country a graveyard, she pointed out.
The abuse of the Police, State officers, and State assets for elections militate against a free and fair election. If the President and his Govt. really wish to stop them, they can., but they are not interested, she remarked.
Therefore I request all members and supporters of the SLFP party to cast their vote to bring about a change to a rule that is tainted by corruption, violence, family rule and bad governance. She also told the voters to fearlessly vote for Democracy and policies of Bandaranaike thinking of the future of their children.
